How odd. The biggest and most consistent critique I've ever heard (or made) about The Offspring is that they mostly love to copy The Offspring.

Which is fine. They've always completely owned that they have a pretty consistent overall "sound" and that diversity of range is not their biggest strength. Although in rotating through their entire catalog all at once, it becomes striking that in spite of that generality they do have more range than one might think. Just selectively. A song like "Hammerhead", for example, is striking in how seamlessly it shifts from being almost thrash metal into a complete surf punk vibe during its "third act", without feeling like two completely different songs stapled together.

Another thing that becomes apparent is how while some of their albums are certainly stronger front-to-back than others, every one has at least two or three of their all-time best songs on it. Along with how they never had any real "growing pains" period where they slowly got good; their very first record was amazing, then "Ignition" was amazing, and then "Smash" came out and was so good it isn't even fair. They were never that consistent again but they never lost the ability to write great songs; they just didn't always have albums that collectively put a bunch of great songs all together in one place but there's not a single throwaway album. Although "Conspiracy Of One" probably brings up the rear, objectively. But even that one has a couple classics, it just feels a bit meandering and unfocused compared to the rest.

My musical taste is completely all over the place, but they've always been a Top 5 band for me. I also got to meet them back in '97 and Dexter, in particular, is an extremely nice guy and by all accounts he's stayed that way, which is awesome to hear.

Two Steps From Hell - excellent background adventure music while playing my MMORPGs like Champions Online or Neverwinter.

Within Temptation - the song "In Vain" from their latest album Resist is my new all-time favorite.

Nightwish - their epic cinematic scores make great "battle music" for aforementioned games.

Well, we made it past the Halfmas Holiday Season -- halfway to Christmas being June 25th -- so now I'm back to listening to a combination of Country and Sinatra/Dean Martin/Tony Bennett/Nat King Cole etc., until November first kicks off the Christmas Holiday Season and I go all-Christmas music 24/7.

Gosh, I sound like such an old man... Wait! I am an old man!!!
