My first visit to He-Man.org was in the late 90’s as a lurker feeling nostalgic for He-Man info. I signed up for the forums in 2002 in conjunction with the reboot of the cartoon to participate in episode talkback threads. Once the cartoon was cancelled in 2004 and there was no sign of further Official He-Man lore being developed, I stopped signing in to the forums and eventually let my user status lapse and I was purged for inactivity. I still visited the site and forums from time to time as a lurker to see if anything new had arisen until I re-signed up for the forums in August of this year (10 years later).
He-Man.org and the vBulletin forums here we’re actually inspirational (along with uo.stratics.com) for my own fan site which I started back in 2004 for a retro game called Legends of Kesmai. Funny enough we had are own Internet community dispute/fallout and I am no longer a part of that community (along with community stagnation and changing interests that occurred).
Below I’ll describe my experiences with He-Man:
80’s
My first memories of He-Man were at the age of 3 in 1987 (of course the show was in re-runs and the last waves of toys were being released - I also was given hand-me-down figures, a sword and shield from family friends who had grown out of them). I was big into collecting the toys and watching the TV show as well as She-Ra. Other favorite shows and action figures included Thundercats, Silverhawks, and TMNT but He-Man was #1 even still to this day). I dressed up as He-Man in 1988. My mom and aunt made me a homemade muscle costume to wear. Also my aunt dressed up as Catra adhering a leather strap on the back of a pizza pan to be used as a shield. I also recall renting the MOTU movie so many times from the video store that my dad eventually negotiated to buy it from them for $45.
I started collecting New Adventures and watching the show when it first debuted but even at this young age I was not as impressed with NA. It just didn’t feel like the original He-Man I was introduced to.
90’s
After New Adventures ended Batman TAS, X-Men TAS, and Power Rangers caught my interest and took it’s place in 1992. I was also collecting WWF figures at this time as well as getting into Marvel and DC Comics and non-sports cards. My next He-Man excursion was stumbling upon He-Man.org in the late 90’s looking for a nostalgic fix.
200X
I was so excited for the 200X reboot of He-Man. I was just starting college but I felt giddy like a kid again watching that 3 parter debut. I even bought a 2002 He-Man (my last figure purchase) to commemorate the occasion and also purchased some of the MVCreation comics. I was terribly disappointed when the show was cancelled and unfortunately my forum usage diminished afterwards until being purged for inactivity.
Despite this I continued to check in from time to time and eventually learned about the MOTUC revival but I wasn’t into collecting figures anymore and the bios/canon we’re not impressing me from a new lore perspective.
201X
In November 2013 I learned of the new MOTU comics that had come about and quickly purchased them all in digital format. The comics have been a high point for me and were the catalyst for me re-joining the forums to engage in talkback threads. I even dressed up as He-Man again last year for Halloween (this time with a store bought costume).
These days I come for the new lore. I don’t collect the figures but it’s interesting see what’s been/being made and for some reason I want to see how the mini comics end (even though I’m not the biggest fan). Secret of the Sword and the MOTU movie hold a special place in my heart and I’ll still re-watch them to this day. But 200X and the new comic are my favorites for character development and continuity reasons.
It’s good to officially be back again!
