Nice to see we finally get movement.

I sincerely hope Sony keeps Tom Rothmans paws off the movie. ( look up reports on how he micromanaged X-men Origins :Wolverine when he was at Fox)

    Yes, it is real:

Sony sets release date for Masters of the Universe reboot

He-Man has the power — and now a release date.

The long-discussed Masters of the Universe reboot has finally found a spot on the calendar, launching into theaters on Dec. 18, 2019, EW has confirmed. McG (Charlie’s Angels) has been on board to direct since early 2016.

EW has also learned from a source familiar with the production that many actors, including A-list talent, are vying for key roles.

Last June, Twilight star Kellan Lutz tweeted about the “amazing meeting” he had with McG and producer Mary Viola. The director later confirmed the meeting in an interview with IGN and said Lutz would be considered “very, very carefully,” noting how “passionate” he is about the character and story.

Beginning as a line of toys and their accompanying mini-comics from Mattel, Masters of the Universe spawned several animated series, and eventually, in 1987, a live-action film starring Dolph Lundgren as Prince Adam a.k.a. the warrior He-Man, the defender of Eternia. Frank Langella portrayed He-Man’s nemesis Skeletor.

Similar in tone to the big superhero-driven comic book adaptations made especially popular over the last decade, McG has found inspiration for the upcoming reboot in a very specific place. “We also need to be cognizant of the incredible resonance of what Kevin Feige is doing with Marvel, and the balance of full-bodied entertainment,” McG previously shared. “That it’s both credible and emotional, action-packed, and the story of a hero’s journey.”

It is cool to finally see a release date. I'm not sure how I feel about a December release. I guess the recent Star Wars movies, Avatar, and the Lord of the Ring movies have done good business in December and into the new year. Even though MOTU will lean heavily towards males, going up against Wicked and a Disney flick might be tough.

The fact that Sony Pictures is still attached doesn't thrill me. They haven't exactly had the best track record for quality film releases for quite some time.

    Hopefully this changes the trend.

With a writers strike possibly coming up, I assume they think they have a finished enough script they are ready to go with to announce a release date.

EW updated their article to say that McG is no longer directing:

The long-discussed Masters of the Universe reboot has finally found a spot on the calendar, launching into theaters on Dec. 18, 2019, EW has confirmed. McG (Charlie’s Angels) had been on board to direct since early 2016, but EW has learned from a source familiar with the production that he is no longer attached and Sony is meeting with directors, and that David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, Man of Steel) is writing the screenplay for the event film.

Its common for big movie's to either get the summer-release or around december.

Personally I am excited! Many know that I want a movie to happen and this is a great step for the process of the movie!

With the Star Wars movies switching it up to May again and Avatar 2 not coming out now until December of 2020, it does leave a nice spot available for an action sci-fi flick in December of 2019. Will other movie studios respect MOTU enough to not put any big guns up against it besides the typical family movies? I'll be curious what gets the December 6 and 13, 2019 spots down the road.

Very cool to see Sony giving the movie such a prime spot; I hope we'll see a great movie (even movie series).

I am also pleased that Sony seems far more interested in the MOTU movie doing well after their debacle in giving Seth Rogen the reigns to the Green Hornet movie (so much wasted potential).

It's a plus if McG is no longer attached. I'd like for this movie to have more substance over style.

The fact that David Goyer is writing does not give me hope for quality. The guy is a hack who rides on the coattails of real talent like the Nolan brothers. He also had a lot of disdain for superhero characters and only looks at them as a cash cow as opposed to truly caring about comic book stories. His new show "Krypton" about a historical look at Superman's doomed planet looks bad.

BUT as long as he is paired with a team that is able to take his few good concepts and fashion a high-caliber product it could do well. Maybe. Not holding my breath.

Disney vacated this date to move Star Wars back to Memorial Day weekend in May. Part of me feels Sony grabbed this date for MOTU just to have a date... regardless of where they are in pre-production.

At long last! I choose not to instantly be skeptical that this movie will be any good. If nothing else, I'm sure visually it will be fun to watch, and it will finally bring MOTU back to the public's eye. I know where I'll be on December 18, 2019 .

I wish I didn't know this. His writing took my excitement from a nuclear explosion to a sparkler.

    Exactly how I feel. I really don't want a depressing He-Man movie.

Here's hoping, but I ain't gonna start jumping up and down.
After some thinking this seems to be the correct analysis. As much as I want to be hopeful this announcement feels like a false alarm. All "REAL" evidence points to the film remaining stuck in development hell. Here is what we know:

The script is still in the process of being rewritten. McG is out so the they no longer have a director. As soon as they do find a director the first thing the new director is going to do is have the script rewritten yet again. We have been in this same holding pattern for more than a decade and this announcement hasn't really changed anything. There is no mention of a budget or casting which are steps critical to the film being officially green lit. They are "looking" for A-list talent but nothing solid is attached to the film. Even DeVon Franklin is staying silent on this one.

This feels like the studio is just testing the waters to see if they can generate a buzz with the public and media. It works well enough as all the entertainment sites are covering the story but it always inevitably falls flat because we probably won't hear anything about the movie again for 4 to 6 months. Sorry to be such a downer.

They’re not “testing the waters”, that’s ludicrous. Sony has had this thing for eight years. Yes, studios are well known to book release dates well in advance just to make sure no one else gets them. Disney does it all the time with their “Untitled live-action fantasy” films and whatnot. However, it also means that the studios who’ve booked those dates fully intend to use them. So Sony, as of now, do intend to have MOTU in cinemas in time for Christmas 2019. Of course, that could change. However, a release date has never been given before. To suggest that the film isn't really in production and that Sony are just doing this to see what people's reactions would be is stupid, plain and simple.

As per Entertainment Weekly, they are meeting with directors and actors already. It seems to me like Sony is moving full steam ahead. I know there are many people on this website who love to be "that guy" (even though they lie and say they'd love to be proven wrong), but just for once, let's bask in a bit of positivity for a bit. Just for a week or so, and then people can start turning the radio off.

The 2nd bold sentence tells us that not only is the movie not yet in "production", its not even in "pre-production" yet.

    This ^^^

You are absolutely right. There is NO production going on. There is a difference between the terms production, pre-production, and development. MOTU is in development NOT production.

    To clarify:

Production = Movie is in progress of being actively made. Full production team of set designers, camera men, make-up artists, costumes, and actors all in action. Scenes from the movie are being filmed.
Pre-Production = Planning phase of casting actors, designing costumes, scouting locations for shooting, planning stunts, ect.
Development = Pre-planning phase of script writing, selecting directors, securing funding

MOTU is in the pre-planning phase of development.
