I heard it, and still i refuse to believe it. These news are like a knife in the heart. Sir George's artwork it was my first exposure, alongside the mini comics to the fantastic world of Eternia. His view, his vision of this primal alien world where titanic forces were clashing for being Masters of the Universe, is still there in my memories. I don't want to say more, i just hope that it's not true. Earl Norem's lost is still too fresh in memory and our hearts. I refuse to believe that William is gone too.

This is very sad. Makes me think of all the countless hours I spent looking at those boxes. He truly brought Eternia to life!

    Very sad to learn about.

As soon as the obituary is printed, I'll post about it on the main page so fans can read how his family remembered him, while getting the chance to share their condolences. If that isn't posted by the time services will happen, and if I learn the services are open to the public, I'll go ahead and post what info is available.

I met him once at Mark Taylor's house in 2011, and then got to see him again at Power-Con in 2012. Both times he was kind, always smiling, and very inviting to all.

Daniel filmed him talking about some of his iconic work, and it was great to hear a bit about all he did. He was an extremely talented artist that helped define the world we love.
Hope to see you at Power-Con 2023, America's Mightiest Toy Convention!

    What are we waiting for?

For me the drawing by William George of He-Man with his axe in hand, in his battle armor, and on Battle Cat roaring, charging and jumping in the battlefield, will be the most iconic picture of the Masters of the Universe ever done, that is defining the franchise for me.

And then another favorite piece of mine of MOTU artwork, perhaps one of the Top 5 in my opinion, George's Road Ripper box artwork! Here this piece, includes William's vision of Eternia, this primal world, this volcanic landscape, with prehistoric and alien beasts coming out from everywhere, while He-Man a battle armor barbarian guides a strange futuristic but at the same time alien vehicle.

Another thing that i loved from William George's artwork is that his He-Man most of times is depicted wielding his battle axe, like he was originally supposed to, before the Sword of Power became the most prominent weapon. I still hope that the battle axe will return to be He-Man's primary weapon someday.

These are beautiful pieces of art. The originals should belong into a museum. RIP William George, my childhood owes you so much.

    Awesome! Thanks for sharing them.

I love how at almost every piece of artwork, William George has these prehistoric or otherwordly creatures accompany them, while there is this atmosphere full of the magma from the volcanic landscape. William George was able to do the world building of Eternia without writing a word, only through the sequences of his amazing artwork. A rare case of Fantasy storytelling through the art, for a franchise that didn't have yet a specific mythos behind it. Personally i called William the Frazzetta of the Masters of the Universe franchise, for his awesome storytelling through the pictures and images. A rare talent indeed.

Yes, volcanic landscapes and strange little creatures are really a hallmark of his vision of Eternia! I did brief write-up on the creatures a while back:

    A wonderful artist...

I really love the Roton picture, the extensive foreground, and the incredible background! The figures atop the cliff with the fire, the planets...

Mr. George was a genuinely nice and amazingly talented individual. I remember calling him and chatting with him on the phone when inviting him to the 2012 Power-Con. He was incredibly gracious and friendly both on the phone and in person. I'm so glad he came that year and that he got to meet so many of his fans face-to-face. My deepest condolences go out to his loved ones.

I didn't realize a lot of the artwork I've seen was his until I saw his signature on the Character Guide's cover art. This is sad news indeed.

    Amazing article! Thanks for sharing.

Yes this combination of dinosaurs, dragons, serpents, demon-like creatures that accompany the primordial landscape, and the alien night sky with the Eternian moons was something that captured me since i first look at William George's fantastic artwork. It's this artwork that made me travel on Eternia, questioning what kind of world is this? William George, a true Master of the Fantasy art, worldbuilding and escapism. I hope that George will be mentioned or honoured by Mattel at a certain point. A tribute it's necessary to aknowledge William George's tremendous contribution for making Masters of the Universe a great success.
