Here's another thought: including CG in the count will get us to #300 a lot sooner, and maybe there are plans for something super special for the fans to celebrate the milestone. Like, "Let's hold off on Snake Mountain until we can advertise it as the 300th item." So, for that reason, let's all agree CG is included in the count.

If the brief is to count Classics releases then I'd count all the multi-packs as one item, and include stuff like the weapons paks.
I wouldn't include the re-issues unless the figures had physically changed in some way.

But if you want to count Classics *figures* then that opens a whole can of worms as we're all going to count them differently.
I would be inclined to include:

    • All the 7 inch figures
    • Pack-ins of smaller figures like Loo-kee and Orko
    • Beasts

    But I wouldn't include:

    • Vehicles
    • Weapons Packs
    • Stands and other accessories

I don't know where I stand on the army-builders. I think the original Horde Trooper two-pack should count as two figures as they have different deco. But the single-carded Horde Trooper is just the same as the clean trooper from the two-pack, so by that logic he wouldn't count. You can create four unique figures from the royal guard two-pack, so is that four figures? And what about Hawke/Delora? Same figure but the different heads technically create two different characters...

The more you think about, the further you go down the rabbit hole.
So I think the most sensible thing to do is just count the Classics releases regardless of how many figures or accessories were included - similar to the way Wakko has done it in his brilliant encyclopaedia (that deserves to be a coffee table book rather than languishing on these boards!)

And for what it's worth: I consider Collectors Choice and Club Grayskull to be the same line. Although the majority of MOTUC figures have a consistant look you can point to outliers throughout the line from 2008 onwards. If Madame Razz and Gwildor are "officially" part of the same line then I see no issue pairing up the Filmation Tongue Lasher with the rest of the Snake Men. But that's just my preference, totally respect anyone who sees things differently.

Not to throw fuel on the is CG part of CC/MOTUC fire, but I think part of it is if you keep figures in package or not. Keeping them in package then sure - CG does look different than CC/MOTUC. I could see the argument that they aren't the same. As someone who opens their figures, outside the package those differences quickly start to disappear. Sure there is a slightly different aesthetic, but to me a filmation Skeletor looks no different next to CC/MOTUC figures than Madam Razz does. I think the figure count can be affected by loose / in package collectors too. Stonedar and Rokkon is two figures in a single box / release. So if you're a loose collector, you're got two independent figures. If you're an in package collector, you have one.

Personally I have to chuckle a bit at the thought of someone holding a loose filmation figure saying 'this won't fit in at all next to my MOTUC Strong Arm, Madam Razz, Icer, Lizard Man, etc...'. But then again I have Mythic Legions and a 200x Oediphus staction in with my MOTUC figures. Same with Thundercats classics and a few DC classics.

Also in terms of counting figures - I feel if it has articulation (even minimal) and is supposed to be a character, it's a figure.

Right or wrong, buying a sub tells Mattel you want more MOTUC figures. Not buying does tells them you don't. Don't let MOTUC end early because you might not like their marketing strategy! Plus polls show you won't regret subbing!

One of the true fan minority - happy MOTU fans!

    Kowl & Loo-Kee counts as a release.

The weapons paks count as individual releases, as do the Grayskull stands, the snake mountain stands, etc.
    ^... and that too!

So, no Club Grayskull (although my personal collection mixes both lines; I mean, I usually have a single character, not CC and CG versions).
Wish list of MOTUC figures: Sagitar, Red Beast, Red Shadow, Red Knight, Hans Hammerholder, Ra-Jar

EDIT: Ash pointed out that I left off Laughing Prince Adam. I've added him in.

Okay, so I went through and tried to figure this out, and it's definitely pushing it, depending on your perception of what constitutes a MOTUC "figure."

    ATTEMPT A

Just going by FIGURES with articulation, including sidekicks, giants, variants, and beasts, and not including items like vehicles and playsets, we don't hit 300. I did not include unarticulated pack-ins like the Darkling in this list, but I did include Broom and others.

Note on 2008 Spirit of Grayskull and Silver She-Ra
    :
I also did not include the 2008 Spirit of Grayskull or Silver She-Ra because those are not officially considered part of the line, as stated by Scott awhile back. They were not officially released to the public for purchase. See quotes from Scott below:

    * 2008 Spirit of Grayskull - "The 2008 employee fig is not part of the official line. Hence left off the poster too. The 2015 release was meant to be a way to deliver this figure officially in the line."

    * Silver She-Ra - "The silver She-ra is a trophy mounted to a base. Not a figure. (But it is a cool piece too!)."

Note on Club Grayskull and Ultimates:
Please don't be mad at me, but I dd include Club Grayskull and Ultimates, because, from what I understand, they are indeed officially under the MOTUC umbrella.

    Think of it this way...

Classics was a single tree trunk that grew for 8 years. It had sub-lines, yes, but it was still all part of that single trunk. In 2016, the tree split off into two distinct branches that grew from that same trunk (CC & CG). Same budget, and same overall umbrella. Unlike Ultimates, however, Club Grayskull is not part of the MOTUC Collector's Choice "universe." It is distinct - its own "universe" (pure Filmation) - but still under the Classics tent. If you prefer to think of it as two lines - since they are clearly distinct in the sense that Filmation is in its own dimension of sorts - that's totally cool. But officially, they are indeed two distinct Classics paths that split at the 2016 fork in the road.

Ultimates, of course, is unquestionably MOTU Classics/Collector's Choice, but with vintage-style packaging (and 100% part of the MOTUC CC "universe").

If all this sends anyone into a fit of rage, I truly am sorry. It doesn't matter to me if they are one line or two, but I'm just repeating what I have heard and confirming what Val said earlier. Thus, I do have them included here, and made the branch-split clear with the designations for "MOTUC Collector's Choice" and "MOTUC Club Grayskull."

    ATTEMPT B

Let's try this again. Drilling down pretty hard and including playsets, vehicles, unarticulated critters, and stands this time doesn't quite get us there either. I even kept Toy Colors Kowl and End of Wars Weapons Pak as separate, since Kowl is a "figure" and the Weapons Pak is an "item." Yeesh, this is getting crazier by the minute...

    ATTEMPT C

    Phew!

Okay, if we divide up the different PACKOUTS as separate figures, you could theoretically have Vykron, Space Ace, and Tank Top as well as Queen Marlena and Captain Marlena Glenn as five separate figures.

    OTHER OPTIONS

    1. Include Delora and maybe Kronis as separate figures. That gets into dicey territory because then we have to ask, "do all head pack-ins count as separate items?" Delora literally IS a separate character, so we could totally count her. Kronis is the "pre-transformation" Trap Jaw and IS listed separately on the checklist poster, so we could kinda count him. That said, the poster does not include Bronze King Grayskull which was indeed released and sold to the public as a variant of regular King Grayskull in 2008. Bronze KG is totally a figure in the line so that's why I have him in every list above.

    2. Include flocked ears Moss Man and/or He-Ro with the SDCC stamp under his armor as a separate figures from regular ears Moss Man and regular He-Ro. To me, that's drilling down too far. WOuld that mean we'd have to count first release He-Man with "pepper spray" eyes and first release Skeletor with open hand as separate? What about the gold belt Stratos mistake and the black sword He-Ro, both of which leaked out of the factory in very small amounts?

    3. Include Maps, Checklist, and Sticker Sheets - that's weird, but no weirder than a lot of what I have on the last couple of lists. Technically, they are indeed Classics items.

    4. Include 2008 Spirit of Grayskull and Silver She-Ra, even though they aren't considered an official part of the line.

    5. Include flight stands and wall-mounted display case, but those were not MOTUC-specific, and were also advertised for use with the DC figures.

    Other suggestions from Ash...
    "
If you want to go with stretching things, since quite a few people bought extras to display with alternative head options, you can add:
+2 for Alternate Palace Guard Pack-outs
    +3 for Horde Troopers Using Sundar's Head's
+3 for Battle Damaged Horde Troopers Using Sundar's Head's
    +2 for Snake Troopers
+5 for the other heads in the Heads of Eternia pack (which I always thought was odd, since Grizzlor isn't from Eternia)
+all of the other figures with 2 heads (Ram-Man, Moss-Man, Man-E-Faces, Teela, Whiplash, Merman, Man-At-Arms, Kobra Khan, Fisto, Faker, Jitsu, Zodak, Tung Lashor, Optik, Horde Prime, Snake Face, Sweet Bee, Stinkor, Evil Lyn, etc)."

Clearly, no matter which way you slice it, trying to get this to hit 300 is a huge stretch.

    Good luck!

Okay, SO, if we want REALLY want to hit 300, there are a few options:

Clearly, no matter which way you slice it, trying to get this to hit 300 is a huge stretch.

    Good luck!
So, again, thanks for putting this together.

If you really wanted to hit 300, you can do this without stretching by any of those items.

If you're counting the stands, then you should probably include item Y4331 Masters of the Universe Classics MOTUC Carded Figure Protectors. This could take the place of Snake Mountain since that's not guaranteed to be coming yet since it's not even a pre-order.

Then there's Laughing Prince Adam, which in this list might make the perfect 300th item.

+all of the other figures with 2 heads (Ram-Man, Moss-Man, Man-E-Faces, Teela, Whiplash, Merman, Man-At-Arms, Kobra Khan, Fisto, Faker, Jitsu, Zodak, Tung Lashor, Optik, Horde Prime, Snake Face, Sweet Bee, Stinkor, Evil Lyn, etc).

If you count this way, then you're way over 300 without having to involve anything like stands or HATMOTU.

What I've concluded from this thread is that it's not a puzzle that can be solved satisfactorily. And, thinking about it, is it really that important? 300 figures as a milestone has never crossed my mind. (Nor did 200 or 100.) If you're into anniversaries, why not just stick with 10 years of Classics?

    Great suggestions!
I can't believe I forgot Laughing Prince Adam! I'll update the lists and add him in to each one.
The MOTUC figure protectors are listed as MOTUC Clamshell cases. I'll change the wording to add "figure protectors" to it.

I know what you mean re: HATMOTU. They are even listed here in the Org toy section as two separate lines. They are distinct, BUT as far as I'm aware, the overall "banner" is officially Classics. We freelanced on Collector's Choice in 2016, an I was personally never asked to do anything for Club Grayskull. However, I do remember it being called Classics 2.0 or "the Filmation versions" in conversation back then. While it was distinct, the overall understanding was that the way of doing things had changed, and that MOTUC was split into two "segments" - distinct, yet under the same umbrella.

That said, whatever works for each individual is cool.

I would buy until Attempt B. Attempt C and other options are like tricking ourselves just to make it to 300. Just let's wait until next wave of CC figures and we will be there (without Snake Mountain, which is still a project), otherwise we will be starting to count things like Thundercats too, or that cute item from "Back to the future" that was packed in for purchases made on Oct 21 2015 I guess...

So basically, depending on what criteria you choose to use, we will either most likely never hit #300 or we hit it long ago. It is up to the individual to choose what they feel should be included and anything else is just someone else's opinion. Based on my own personal tally, I am looking forward to item #250, which we will hopefully hit by the end of 2020. As mentioned above, I think a better milestone to watch for, is the number of consecutive years that this line can go. Hurray for 10 years of MOTUC!

For me, I would count each articulated figure and exclude vehicles and playsets. Also, I consider Club Grayskull as a separate line from Classics 1.0, so I would exclude those figures from the count too.

The most important reckoning for me is by figure on my shelf, b it e end that is not 100 simple. For instance I count Orko and Prince Adam as separate. I don't really count lookee or cowl though, or cringer. I also count army builders as 2 (I my heart I count snakemen as 4)

I count giants. I count large beasts like shadow beasts and Griffin but not vehicles, though I count their pilots.

I think I consider the question as "300 figures" not releases. Figures or characters or creatures but not accessories or minifigures (aforementioned lookee or the birds for instance)

Honestly I'm still torn on including lookee but not at all about Kowl. Weird right? I'll count him and the other as the accessory.

I don't count chrome she ra, statue greyscale, or original spirit of. I count the Tru 2 packs.

I am a mostly closed collector but Star sisters is 3 figures. Not 1. Re issues don't count. Small figures do. I also count beasts and figures with vehicles. Motuc/D.C. Sets count as 1 figure. Only one is motu. Filmation counts. It is part of motuc. The line was blurred so much, they need to be counted. I would go with the penny list. Getting close to 300.

I don't care how many times you count a 3 pack....but it's 3 figures. No way around that. We are not counting sku,s we are counting figures.

Side note. I am watching heman and she ra on Netflix with my 4 year old son and is it me or is she ra a way better cartoon than heman? Just saying.

    ATTEMPT A

Just going by FIGURES with articulation, including sidekicks, giants, variants, and beasts, and not including items like vehicles and playsets, we don't hit 300. I did not include unarticulated pack-ins like the Darkling in this list, but I did include Broom and others.
This! A thousand times this. This is amazing Penny! Attempt A for the win. This gives Super7 some time to develop something for the 300th figure release since Attempt A only gets us to 275. That means only 25 figures to get to the 300th figure. So if Super7 can keep everything on track:

2018 4 CC figures yet to be revealed (279)
    2019 8 CC figures + 8 CG figures yet be revealed (295)
    2019 PowerCon 3? figures (298)
    2019 SDCC? 1 figure? (299)
    300th figure

We could get there sooner than we think just by figures alone. I'm all for this.

I am so mad at you right now! So very very mad! SOOOOOOO MAAAAADDD!

Just kidding. While I disagree with the inclusion of the Club Grayskull in the count this is a very nicely detailed job on the various ways of coming up with a variety of roads to 300. I'm impressed!

I've brought up several reasons in other threads why I don't think these are technically the same toyline. I've also pointed out in the past that during the Mattel days the term "Classics" became a branding term the same way at Hasbro "Legends" and "Black series" are branding terms that include several different toylines ranging a variety of scales and play patterns (Legends and Black Series include not only multiple scales, but also role play items, small die cast vehicles, collectible helmets, prop replicas, etc). As I've pointed out before if you look back at the original Mattel listings the term "Masters of the Universe Classics" was also attached to the mini figure 2-packs, and the jumbo scale vintage figures--and no one is using that to argue that the minis and jumbos are thus all part of the single Classics toyline (although if you did include them that could possible push us up to 300). I don't want to beat a dead horse by repeating all the arguments I've made in other threads but to me the very title of this thread itself really calls out a new reason why they should be treated separately.

So I'm going to for the most part go with this branch description, but as someone who works in the film and television industry if anything I would think of Club Grayskull as a spin-off of Classics. So as I go I may use both terms intermitted.

So here is the question: Why are we discussing the 300th figure--why is the number 300 impressive/important/a toyline landmark, etc? The answer is that a single action figure toyline reaching 300 figures and running for 10 years is extremely rare.... Or is it...?

Prior to the creation of Club Grayskull, and this new debate, for years both many of us on the org and those at Mattel would brag about how one of the things that made Classics so impressive is that unlike what was going on with all those other big properties at retail, Classics was all ONE ongoing toyline. Star Wars, Transformers, GI Joe, etc were all putting out a ton of figures but each line would only run for a couple of years prior to getting restarted and replaced with a brand new line. Thus even though those brands were going strong their lines were short and often small compared to the impressive long running streak of Classics.

That had always been the logic. The other brands were always restarting their lines thus restarting the count while Classics just kept going year after year. So for example between 2007 and today there have been over 900 Modern Era GI Joe action figures released or announced through 2018. But because they keep cancelling one line and starting a new one by "branching" the 25th line off into the Rise of Cobra line which branches off into the Pursuit of Cobra line which branches off into the 30th line which branches off to the Retaliation line etc. etc. we have traditionally treated all those branches as different lines while we count Classics as one. And just to be clear my 25th Doc sits on the shelf next to my POC Lifeline just as seamlessly as Filmation He-Man can stand on the shelf next to Classics She-Ra. Just like with MOTU in the modern era each branch is using the same figure style and form as the branch that came before it yet in Star Wars no one is saying there have been a gazillion Star Wars 3-3/4" Black Series figures just because they are all part of the same tree with Vintage Series, and Saga Legends, and Movie Heroes and the 30th, etc etc. Again traditionally both here and throughout the toy industry/community this has always been part of the argument for why Classics was reaching impressive numbers--because those branches and spin offs count as divisions and restarts.

So if you stick to the traditional way where branches and spin-offs do not count then 300 figures is a really impressive number. For action figure lines only a couple of others have been able to do that. GI Joe did it twice with the original vintage RAH line and again with the 25th line (just counting the 25th--not counting the other lines like Rise of Cobra, Pursuit of Cobra etc.) Transformers did it in the vintage era but hasn't done it since because they are constantly restarting by branching and spinning off into new lines. Marvel Legends did it recently with the infinite series. I think WWE had done it at both Mattel and with the Superstars line at Jakks. While I can think of a few that came close or are on their way I think that's it off the top of my head (but it's possible there could be one or two more as I'm not going back and doing a physical count of every single figure in every single line).

Thus under the traditional count of not including "branches" 10 years and/or 300 is very rare. On the flipside if you do count both Classics and Club Grayskull and thus lump the branches and spin-offs together then likewise you you have to do the same with all the other brands and combine all of their similar branches and spin offs together too which means combining all the branches of modern era Transformers into one and combining Power of the Force with Power of the Jedi with Star Wars Saga, and combining new sculpt era Valor vs Venom with Spy Troops with GI Joe vs Cobra. etc etc. Suddenly doing this makes the 300 figures less impressive. If we're going to include the spinoffs and branches in the counts then Star Wars has probably more than double the 300 number at least twice with both the 90s Kenner era and the Modern era. GI Joe has blown it out of the water 3 times with 500+ for the vintage era, 500+ for the new sculpt era, and 900+ for the modern era. Transformers has blown past 300 at least 3 or 4 times depending on how you want to group the branches and spin offs. Turtles has done it probably 3 times, once in each era. Marvel has done it with 2 different scales at both 6" and 3-3/4". DC Classics has now passed that number. WWE would have now done probably 3 times. Probably Power Rangers too. On and on. Suddenly if we count the branches and spin offs as one then 300 figures and/or 10 years is not that unique or impressive of a landmark.

The bottom line is it doesn't make sense to count this way. No one else is combining the different branches of other brands to come up with the line number--they just count the number in that one line. And to imply that we should do this combining here with MOTU is counter intuitive to what we've been saying in regard to how impressive Classics is to be still going for 10 years while all those other retail lines only last a couple of years. If you combine branches then suddenly all those other lines likewise have been going 10+ years with way more figures. The only thing that is accomplished by suggesting we should combine branches is that it makes Classics suddenly look less special and less impressive than what it really is.

That's my 2-cents. Obviously anyone can disagree and at the end of the day it doesn't really make a difference, but to me its actually a disservice to the incredible accomplishments of Classics to combine the lines together as under this NEW interpretation it makes the idea of ONE continuous toyline running that long and growing this big a lot more common.

    Food for thought.

Mattel "ended" their versions of Classics and Super 7 "restarted" Classics. Are they truly the same line or yet another branch and could that mean we have to start the count from Super 7s first Classics release?

    what counts as #300?

hmm. so many thoughts. not quite sure how to summarize but let me try to summarize.

do I think a 2 pack qualifies as such? 3 pack? yes. multi pack? yes.

the key for me is counting. we can sit here and split hairs as to whether each figure in a multi pack counts as one or not. that's NOT what I'm talking about.

if we are talking about only figures, which we really mean, then you go ok. for example: here are the 290 figures. then with each announcement you go at #291 is filmation "a" at #292 is CG "X". because if you go here are a b & c for x line coming in Q4. oh by the way one of them IS the 300th figure. don't do that.

also by doing that you can build hype for #300. To me there has to be a clear answer.

sublines? doesn't matter it's whole. not the sum.

The problem is the questions are vague enough it can mean a couple different things. or we say "x" but we really mean "y"

#300. The 300th figure? The 300th item? (which weapons packs, vehicles etc). Cause there is a difference. don't say 300 and mean only the 300th figure. because I feel that's what we do.

variants. if you only mean 300th original figure then say that. Me personally, variants count.

be specific and have a head count.

Had Super7 started the line over again thus going back and starting with a clean set of character selection that includes doing versions of what Mattel had already done I think the argument would lean towards yes that would be a new start, but since they continued on the line with the obscure characters as a continuation based on figures not yet released I would say that indicates that Super7 Collectors Choice is a direct continuation of Mattel’s line and thus an ongoing continuation of a single toyline

Similar to when Toy Biz stopped making Marvel Legends and Hasbro picked up the line. At first they weren't well-received, but over time Hasbro got MUCH better at making Marvel-based action figures. They never started "fresh" from the beginning though, and many collectors consider Hasbro's ML line a continuation of TB's line.

Be careful though, this is a very heated topic to some...

    ATTEMPT A

Just going by FIGURES with articulation, including sidekicks, giants, variants, and beasts, and not including items like vehicles and playsets, ... I did not include unarticulated pack-ins like the Darkling in this list, but I did include Broom and others.:
I like this version/attempt, but I'd include the pack-ins that are unique characters AND include variations (pack-in, or not) as separate figures (i.e. Kronis/Trap Jaw, Hawke/Delora, Queen/Astronaut Marlena as well as non-mistake variants as simple as alternate paint deco).

As far as the "should we" vs. "shouldn't" we of including Club Grayskull in MOTUC? I am definitely split, as I see a lot of support in this thread for both, and either way you'd go, it wouldn't change that every character and beast gets a nod.

Similar to the original Kenner Star Wars line count that includes the Rebo Band, Crumb and Jabba... but the difference being that a Tauntaun would also be counted as well. On this note, the Club Grayskull element is much like the Droids and Ewoks lines which some people include in the Vintage Kenner figure collection count.

I just read this, and wanted to note that I never considered that Collector's Choice wasn't a continuation of MOTUC.

Well, I guess that means I'm officially leaning more toward Club Grayskull being included in this figure count, as I'm already in for counting Collector's Choice figures.

    In an interesting development:

The New Collector's Choice Motuc figures (Super 7 Wave Two!) that just landed on my doorstep have a "Tenth Anniversary 2008 - 2018" Logo on their packaging and brown shipper box.

The Club Grayskull figures? Not so much.
