New Release Date: March 5, 2021 for Sony Pictures' Masters of the Universe film

    Hopefully, this one sticks.

According to the latest press release from Sony Pictures, March 5, 2021 is the new release date for the live-action Masters of the Universe film. Initially, Deadline listed two other films that are slated for release on the same date as Masters, an untitled Universal Event Film and Noelle Stevenson's animated "Nimona" from Fox, but have since updated to include the new Warner Bros. film that is based on the Mortal Kombat video games.

Noah Centineo is still attached to star as He-Man. Adam and Aaron Nee are directing and have screenwriting credits. The script was rewritten by Matt Holloway and Art Marcum who are known for "Iron Man." Jason Blumenthal, Todd Black and Steve Tisch from Escape Artists are serving as producers.

    Deadline.com:
Sony Pictures has set a March 5, 2021, release date for Masters of the Universe, the latest film adaptation of a Mattel toy line. The film originally had been slated for Christmastime this year.

Noah Centineo is set to play He-Man in live-action Columbia Pictures movie based on the 1980s action figures that spawned an animated TV show and a 1987 feature with Dolph Lundgren as He-Man. Adam and Aaron Nee are attached to direct the pic and are writing the script with Art Marcum and Matt Holloway.

Plot details about the new film aren’t know, but He-Man — as any child of the ’80s could tell you — a muscular medieval guy who is trying to ward off the nasty Skeletor and his dark armies as both good and evil fight for control of Castle Grayskull.

As of now, Masters of the Universe will battle against Fox’s animated Nimona and an Untitled Universal Event Film on that weekend.

I doubt it will get moved to an earlier date unless by a week or two. I don't view Noelle Stevenson's Nimona as stiff competition. I'm not sure what Universal's movie is, but I could see that film moving particularly since Universal has a 2/26 movie as well. With no Avatar 2 anymore, December 2020 might have worked, but I expect more big films for then will be announced besides Coming to America 2, The Croods 2, and Cruella. A March 2021 date leaves some wiggle room as far as any production delays. This will likely be a heavy special effects movie, so that takes extra time as well.

Sounds like a good date to release the movie, less competition and also it gives them enough time to make it. I'd hate the film to be rushed. and the release date brought forward.

It’s a good release date. Sony has done well to nab it early. There isn't really any major competition, and most importantly, its not going up against a MCU film. Blockbuster season starts in March now. My guess is that SDCC 2020 will be very MOTU-heavy. That will likely be where the first bit of footage is released. Good thing, also, is that it will have a good solid year and a half of post-production. To have so long is a rarity in this day and age.

Should coincide nicely with the 40th anniversary of the launch of the vintage toy line.

Mortal Kombat has actually been more relevant and popular than MOTU so I could actually see it doing more business, especially if the cast is right.

Of course the same could be said of MOTU if they round it out with some big names lol

Mortal Kombat would appeal directly to the same demographic that would watch MOTU. People born between 1975 to 1985 is the main demographic of the original fanbase for both franchises. The same kids who played with He-Man toys in the '80s were into video games like Mortal Kombat in the '90s. Mortal Kombat is a bunch of muscle bound warriors who fight each other in costumes that wouldn't be out of place on Eternia. It is the same visual aesthetic.

I would almost rather go up against some cruddy Star Wars reboot and cash in on the "Star Wars fatigue" than complete with a movie that will directly cannibalize our demographic.

New Masters of the Universe and Mortal Kombat movie in March 2021? As a big fan of both franchises ( MK is my second favorite video game series - just behind The Legend of Zelda ) this is just...I have no words to describe this awesomeness!!!

Basically, this is a classic game of Hollywood chicken. Who's gonna blink first? Someone will. It’s all about that first trailer and the buzz that ensues thereafter. SDCC 2020 is about to get very interesting, as both films will probably have a big presence. If Mortal Kambat goes for an R rating (or 15 in the UK), that will make a huge difference. And I wouldn't really say they're going after the exact same audience. Yes, there will be crossover, but MOTU will also be going for families and kids. Mortal Kombat almost certainly won't go for the kiddies. I may just be a biased MOTU fan, but really, I'm not concerned. I think MOTU has a lot more going for it in order to please the general audience, and the GA is key.

I just hope they do a decent job. The guys (ugh) who did the Jem movie claimed to be fans and to listen to fans and look what a dumpster fire that turned out to be.

Inevitably one of them is going to change the date ,at least one or two weeks forward. Similar audience, both need a re-install,they shouldn't hurt each other.
The Aquaman/Bumblebee experience should be considered.

Mattel is going to have a movie motu presence at SDCC 2019, in July. Obviously they won’t have footage ready, but toy prototypes? Concept art?

It’s enough that Mattel isn’t letting Super7 do their Skeletors Lair booth at SDCC this year. Actually Brian Flynn said they can’t do anything motu at SDCC 2019 at all.

Yeah I think either MK or MOTU will move away from that date. With an MCU movie coming out in Feb 2021 (likely Black Panther 2), I imagine one of these movies will move into a later date in March.

I'll believe it when I see it. I've heard movie talk for about 10 years now.

Not a single “oh that gives Noah plenty of time to roid up!” comment.

Where are all the cynics at?

Whatever happens, there's still plenty of room to manoeuvre. April 2021 is very sparse as of now, for example. I think Mortal Kombat has a higher hill to climb, TBH. A first-time director (he hasn't done a single film, but loads of commercials), and the main story synopsis sounds cheesy as hell. Still, its not wise to be complacent. MOTU also has to climb a hill, but I do think it could target more people and be generally more appealing to the masses. The first trailer and the buzz that ensues is key. We all saw what happened with Sonic. I think if Sony comes out with a safe, generic movie they could be in trouble. Hopefully the Nee brothers deliver something with personality and charm. They definitely seem like they are capable of doing that. So we'll see.
