Actually I think the movie is not happening at theaters because Sony is not gonna spending over 90 millions on a brand the they aren't owns , and that budget is not enough for a motu movie
So Sony needs a partner to help with the budget and they could finding on Netflix.
I do believe this is something different , a new format or a new plan

I'm not sure if the main expectation of Mattel with this project (and others one) is selling toys , I think they know that the action figures aren't the stars on the shelves anymore , the children could buying some character but they not follow collections.
I think the expectation of Mattel with this movie is getting reputation at the movie world , and the Mattel name is on top next to its brands turning into movies .

Yeah is Mattel really concerned about toys for the movie? They will have MOTU Origins toys already and I figure the tv series will drive toy sales too. I am liking this Netflix idea more and more.

An interesting thing that Mattel's CEO Ynon Kreiz made note of at a conference last month (and I believe one time before that) is that they have the right to co-finance movies as part of their deals with the film studios. Once again he stressed that the current strategy is to not take any capital risks, however, he essentially said that co-financing isn't off the table if the strategy changes down-the-road. They could look into bringing in investors/co-financing.

Umm... I am totally cool with it going to Netflix as is a ton of others it seems. Not sure the Org as a whole can do anything since the Org as a whole isn't united on the same view.

This movie could be a FAILURE and still get more interest on Netflix for MOTU than it could AS A HUGE SUCCESS in theaters.

I like Voltron and She-Ra. Nothing about watching either made me want to buy the toys. I buy Transformers. I'm eager for the Netflix Transformers show and I think it MIGHT sell some toys because the toys are pretty good right now.

I think the big thing is probably that Netflix is unproven at selling toys TO KIDS. It sells stuff targeted at adults pretty well. I'm sure Stranger Things adult merch is a big driver and I think Netflix is behind the CRAZY resurgence of Seinfeld, Friends, and The Office merch to adults.

They look to also be on the verge of poaching up the streaming rights to Dan Harmon's Community for a few hundred million once they lapse at Hulu next year and they've managed to sign half the main cast to contracts for shows, keeping Joel McHale, Alison Brie, and Gillian Jacobs pretty relevant. The merch for that show (which ended 4 years ago) seems to be ramping slowly back up in anticipation of a Netflix run and a Netflix movie, which is on the DL now but probably a few weeks away from an announcement at a big cast reunion coming up.
yup, I think we will be fine. There have been a ton of marque movies that have been coming out. The hook will be to see what effect it has on selling merch. So far there hasn't been any movie launched with merch potential fully built in.

A couple of days ago Kellan Lutz posted this commentary about the movie

    Kellan Lutz:
"Just before I said goodbye to my @heman @masters dream and cut the locks. Wishing @ncentineo @sony @netflix @adamnee @devonfranklin and everyone fan and friend an amazing Masters Of The Universe shoot.
Can’t wait to see the magic come to life again.

Just because some of our dreams don’t come true and others live them, doesn’t mean we can’t be happy and supportive of them.

    @ncentineo YOU HAVE THE POWER"

I'm not sure He mentioned Netflix due the rumors or Kellan knows that the movie will finally arrive on Netfilx

Putting your fandom aside on what you personally want a Masters movie to be...

Transformers, GI Joe, TMNT, and Power Rangers had blockbuster movies. Those 4 movies put toys back on the shelves and put the franchises back in people's minds.

Did Voltron do that? Sure, toys of Voltron will always sell but did they get a big number of new fans or was it just the same group of nostalgic fans buying them?
She-Ra? I don't know ANY kids watching this...and honestly the only time I hear about it is on here (although She-Ra showing up as a meet and greet at Islands of Adventure was fun to see).
    CastleVania?
    Dark Crystal?

Aside from the existing fans, I don't see these Netflix series moving the needle. The same will happen with Masters. Sony is going to make a movie that satisfies the masses (while making it vanilla for true fans) but it won't really gain any new fans because of the distribution methods.

I'm fine with it ending up on Netflix but I really think, in order to expand the brand, a run in the major theaters needs to happen along with a huge marketing budget to get people re-introduced and shown that it can be different than the campy Filmation show that has largely become a joke to the public.

DreamWorks' Spirit Riding Free is an example of a Netflix distributed series that is very successful. I don't think SRF ever reached the heights of Voltron in terms of overall audience numbers, judging based on the few insights that are available online. However, in comparison it has the stronger kid base and is more successful when it comes to the merchandise side of things.

SRF: 1) expanded beyond toys and publishing into lifestyle products and is also a hit internationally 2) had ALL of its seasons released on DVD 3) is getting more episodes beyond the 52 that were ordered.

Additionally, DreamWorks recently announced that a feature film is in development and slated to be released in May, 2021.

I still don't get why they're having such a hard time making this particular movie. They've come through with Transformers, G.I. Joe, Smurfs, Ninja Turtles, etc. but they can't seem to make this fantasy/sci-fi movie work.

One huge hurdle is the amount of CGI unless the film takes place on Earth and even then it will take large amount of effects which runs a budget up. The Joker movie that was just released had a low production budget of $55 million dollars. That doesn’t even have a huge amount of CGI or effects.

On top of that you need to find and afford an Avengers Endgame volume of cast becase people are expecting multiple heroes and villains to appear. I can’t imagine the film working if it was He-Man and Skeletor and then just a few supporting characters that are dressed up like normal soldiers or something.

Even beyond all of that it is just difficult to find a vision that can be settled upon and supported along with finding a director and crew that can actual accomplish that vision.

I think the best way to makes sure an MOTU is an undisputed, honest-to-god hit is to work hard, get the best script you can, make sure it is light, fun, exciting, that it is well-paced, moves along well, is not over-long, and then do something that was elsewhere debated on these boards:

    Make He-Man gay.

Go all the way with it too. And by that I don't mean make it a porno, but I do mean make it matter-of-fact and unambiguous.

There has never been a big budget, "tent pole," super-hero type movie with a main character who was unabashedly and unrepetentedly gay.

If the movie is good outside of this, and meanwhile He-Man has a love interest who is another man, and that he "gets the boy" in the end - the pattern of so many action-adventure movies over the years, just with a gay hero - it will get tremendous amounts of positive press. It will be a landmark film. Reviewers will wax poetic about the risk it took, and social commentators will wax poetic about what a bellwether moment this is for the LGBTQ movement. It will become the "it" movie that everyone proving how cool they are will need to see.

    Do it.

That thread got locked since it went south, but if one wants to debate having He-Man as gay, they can create a thread in the Tar Swamp about it (access to the Tar Swamp can be granted by contacting the administrator dorrmann). This is not the thread to do it. Thanks.

As par the Hollywood Reporter article, they've finally settled upon a vision, with two directors who've been on this thing for a year and a half. Aaron and Adam Nee have obviously delivered a version that everyone is happy with, but an expensive one. Sony basically wants help to pay for it, more or less. The article says the film is "pricey". My gut tells me this Netflix thing is a done deal, or as good as, and I expect some sort of announcement within a month or so. In all honesty, it kind of makes perfect sense. Netflix has investment in the MOTU/POP universe already, they need content and Noah Centineo who has already been cast as Prince Adam is basically the poster boy for Netflix. They probably bit Sony's arm off as soon as they approached them.

Not too optimistic on the development on Netflix direction but you made a good point on all accounts.

If this is to be, I hope all fans support it nonetheless... Go MOTU!

This makes me wonder if a Netflix partnership could be developed where, a studio partners with Netflix on a movie, the studio has distribution rights, Netflix has streaming rights and first dibs before going to Blu-ray.

I could imagine a situation where a movie could be released and allowed to play out in the theater for as long as its viable. If it underperformed, it could then be distributed on Netflix for some time through their agreement, before it goes to video.

Best case scenario, it does well in theaters, plays for a while, makes lots of money, and gets a second life on Netflix soon after.

I'm not sure this is what's happening, but it would be an interesting set up if it was.
