    Modern ThunderCats Toys Thread (2)

Hi, Gang! We had some technical difficulties in the first TC thread, so letís continue the discussion here for Mattelís (brief) line as well as the new offerings from Super 7, to be revealed August 12th, 2019! (Once we figure out the troubles with the other TC thread, we can merge the two or something.)

I’m going to go with shiny for the new line! We’ve gotten furry before, and when I look back on memories of the cartoon, etc, I always think of it as shiny! The one Bandai did in their very brief Classics line was shiny, and I liked that one. Is it the 12th yet?

I thought it was just me having issues. I think Mumm-ra cursed the old thread with his ding dong dell rhymes.

So what are folks' thoughts about adding in some 20XX Thundercats stuff? (If they are going to go deeper than the core team and mutants, etc.)

Original characters? The Duelist, the Drifter, Tookit, Leo, Panthera, etc.

Or how would you feel about them using obviously superior 20XX designs for certain characters over original? Like Driller or King Claudus?

Or how about second versions of certain characters in 20XX? Maybe instead of releasing the original Thunderkittens and Pumyra again, release their 20XX design first?

Definitely don't mess with the core team and mutants. Originals first on those for sure.

But any room for any 20XX in the line? Thoughts?

My ideal take is this - do with Thundercats Classics what Mattel did with Masters of the Universe Classics - cherry pick from all the available source material to give us the best possible overall line and story.

For the most part this means using characters and designs from the 80's cartoon. But I think there's room to tweak the narrative a tad to include some of the good ideas from the 2011 cartoon. I'll admit to liking the Claudus (Clawdus?) design from 2011 better. But Dobo was a great character and design, so repurpose his story for third earth. Likewise include the likes of Javan, Tookit, Horus, the Duelist, and Gormax. And then turn to the ancestral Thundercats - Leo, Panthera, Tygus (also Shen and Rezard). There were cool elephant people, and bird people... tons of cool stuff to dip into.

One of my very favorite things about MOTUC was the way it married all of the various source materials and disparate canon into one narrative to be able to include as much cool stuff as possible. In doing it that way you can keep the Robinson Crusoe style exploration after crash landing on Third Earth - and leave behind the Thundercat society as evil opressors - but still wrap in Dog City or the floating bird city Avista or the Elephant Village.

There was plenty of creative and interesting stuff introduced in the 2011 toon that I would love to have represented in a comprehensive figure line. Let the 4 Horsemen do their thing to "Classicize" the designs so they mesh with the designs from the original toon and away we go.

I'm certain that Super 7 will be doing figures based entirely on the 80's cartoon and that's fine and almost certainly smart. But that doesn't mean I won't be wishing for some of those cool characters from the 2011 cartoon. (I actually already started customizing a Dobo figure using a spare Jackalman body and a modified head from the Power Rangers Kruger figure).

Eager to see what Super 7 has to say today. I plan to talk to them about it as long as I can at Power Con on Saturday too.

Honestly I didn't care for the 200x series. Besides Super7 already has four waves of Thundercats Classics in the works. Which means the core teams are being completed and we already heard in the other thread that they are also making the Lunataks so those would be part of the four waves in the works. I doubt there will be any 200x style offered.
So Glad Super7 has the Thundercats Lic. Looking forward to all they have to offer.

Shiy and metalic. It was always that way in the cartoon. Bandai's shield looked and functioned a lot better than the 4 Horsemen Mattel version.

Personally I hope not, I hated the majority of the 2011 designs and wasn't that keen on the cartoon.

Bandai's claw is horrible, I can't stand those skinny fingers, it doesn't look threatening or strong. Undoubtedly, the best is the one that IconHeroes sculpted for the mini-statue, that is quite similar to the 4Horsemen claw, but without hair. It's perfect. I used it in the mock up that I published a few weeks ago, take a look.

Yes I seen that. Looked good. I admit the fingers on Bandai's were a bit thin but the overall size and proportion to the finger looked good.

I originally subscribed to the first Matty line, but then cancelled it the very next day when they announced the series was going to be stopped after that first release of figures. If Super7 comes out and says that there's only going to be one wave of releases, or gives us some ridiculous "We'll see" answer about getting more figs created afterwards, then I won't subscribe to this one. I hate incomplete lines, and I'll especially be upset if whatever they decide to release doesn't have the original 8-back figures. I don't need a random Grune or Jagga with no one else on my shelves. But maybe if they plan some sort of Ultimate Lion-O release, I'd bite on that.

Still, I won't support a line of non-main characters that will never get to the central heroes and villains. If Super7 wants my money they need to guarantee the main team at the very least.

    I agree with this.

I really do think that the original series does NOT hold up very well. Something about the acting and dialogue and stuff... just makes me cringe. He-man still holds up. GI Joe still holds up. Knight Rider is MUCH better now than it has any right to be... but Thundercats and Voltron? The designs and concepts were MUCH better then the actual product. The opening is still in the top 3 openings of all time, but the actual episodes... not great.

So I was all open to a 200x style reboot... but I really think the result there was over rated. Making the cats native to the planet... and an oppressive regime over the enslaved lizards... was just BAD... Making the eye of Thundera actually stolen property of Mumm Ra?? BAD.... and really the costumes and uniforms of the original really don't look good in cosplay... but they looked AWESOME on the toys and in the show. I hated the redesigns.

So really I don't want to see ANY of the redesigns show up in S7's line. That T-cats show GOT toys... now I want updated versions of MY cats :P And really I don't want ANYTHING even 2nd string to show up until at least all the main cast is done.... I don't even want Slyth and vulterman until I get all the thundercats. I'm just sooooo TIRED of the line dying before the cats are finished.

I have owned the series on DVD forever but am just now getting around to watching it. I'm about 8 episodes in. I am surprised how much I'm enjoying it, but at the same time, I agree with ALL of the above, especially the redesigns. While the 200x MOTU cartoon took the classic designs and (most of the time) improved upon them, 2011 ThunderCats took the original designs and made them messier and/or uglier. Only Mumm-Ra looks OK (in his mummified form), but that's mostly because they didn't change much about his look.

Having said all that, I don't need any figures from the 2011 series. I like some of the new characters like the Duelist, the Drifter, and the Petaltars, but I don't need figures of them. I'd rather the figure line focus solely on the classic cartoon.

As usual I asked for my contact in getting these ultimate thundercats wave, and he did but it will be months before I'll get it. Nevertheless I'm happy to finally secure an order. Just recently scored a Mattel Lion-O and i intend to track down all characters of the sole mattel wave eventually. Yes it seems Super7 and Mattel TCats are the same but like my CG collection, I dont mind having the Mattel wave and Super7 together..... the fun of completing and searching is part of collecting these stuff.

    Thanks Super7.

Even then, how many 7 inch lines have playsets? You have Mego type stuff. Cardbord playsets. You have some medium sized playsets in the Slimepit range for true 1:12 6 inch lines. The smaller the figure, the more common playsets get. Until you get to 1-2 inch figures where the playsets often outnumber the unique figure sculpts.

Going 7 inch instead of DCUC's 6.5" made a difference on playsets for this line. Going 7" instead of true 1:12 6" makes a difference. MOTUO is coming out of the gate as 1:13 makes playsets more likely. Shaving fractions of an inch off of any one figure dimension saves inches off a playset dimension. Shaving nches off of one playset dimension saves even more cubic inches. This saves ounches of plastic which may seem small but then you have a 100,000 unit run at retail (which is part of how you make playsets affordable in the first place) and those ounces and inches become millions of dollars in production and freight.

7 or 8 inch figures getting building or environmental playsets in plastic AT ALL is insane. There is NOTHING ELSE like MOTUC Snake Mountain or Grayskull. The only reason we didn't get every vintage MOTU vehicle and playset offered is because the size priced people out and the ones we did get use about as much plastic the WHOLE VINTAGE LINE.

saw some of your comments on tcats.org and i'm curious about a couple of things. why should 4hm by default be praised over companies like neca ''because they tried to get the license before'' you aren't aware i guess neca have tried to buy the license multiple times in the past? but what wb has been asking have always priced them out, and before that it was jerry who used to own sota that went after it.

yeah, 4hm are good maybe even great sculptors but the buck they are using was outdated even back when it was ''new'' by industry standard, and now in 2019 it's like showing up with a brand new early 1900's t-ford to a carshow. and the reason s7 are still using it?

because it's way way cheaper than having 4hm create new tooling, molds and buck. they ''re-launched'' the line with an almost 50% price hike, using worse quality plastic, worse quality paints and the same woefully outdated buck. if you can't see that this brand is nothing but an easy cash grab for s7 that they could give a **** about at the end of the day? then i also have this exellent condition bridge to sell you, it's current location is san francisco, but for no extra charge to what i'm asking for it i'll have it shipped to the location of your asking. act now and i'll even throw in this set of 12 used staplers.

so yeah, the license would by all accounts be in way better hands away from s7. and while 4hm at one point may have been industry leading in terms of sculpt quality. that gap has shrunk over the years as more and more companies have started to employ talented sculptors, and today even giants like hasbro are employing top of the line sculptors. neca's turtles for instance to name one example are objectively easily on par with 4hm's best work in terms of detail and how close to the source material it is.

and their buck is way superior to the old ****** motuc one.

    - The MOTU buck is great because it is a recognizable form that is being branched out to other IP such as Thundercats,TMNT, etc. It is not about superior articulation or outdated/ updated, it is that the classics buck is a literal classic now.

    - I doubt anybody is being paid here by Super7 to depend them, that is ridiculous. What I see here is a satisfied and a happy fan of MOTU and Thundercats that is Super7 is catering now that no one else is doing.

    - Both of you can say sensible but the truth is you both aren't. For those who simply don't like what's happening and losing interest, you can't seem to get to over and about it ..such a waste of time and energy isn't it?
