MOTU Origins - Minicomics Discussion Thread

The Masters of the Universe Origins -toyline will come with brand new Minicomics. We know so far that Robert Rudman of Mattel has had a hand in the writing part. No artists have been announced.

Wave 1 Minicomic cover has been unveiled.

Wave 2 Minicomic cover and story has been unveiled.

Nice! I like the art quite a bit and hope it's indicative of what's inside.
I think the only eyesore is the title. That font is pretty bad here (I mean, it's sort of reminiscent of "Friday the 13th", but something looks off here- that soft halo effect underneath makes it look a little.. cheap).
But hey- that's me nitpicking first thing in the morning before coffee.
    Look!
    SHADOW BEASTS!

And is it true that there will be one comic per entire wave of figures, rather than each individual figure coming with it's own story?

This is fake. In the online listings for the Origins figures, the wave one minicomic cover is a redrawn He-Man and the Power Sword cover.

That is what Mattel told at Power-Con 2019.

    One Minicomic per Wave.

I reckon it was the art from SDCC 2-pack used as placeholder art for product images.

It's not fake. The Walmart.com listing for Skeletor shows this comic packed behind the figure in the MOC shot.

    Nice! Thanks for sharing!

Not a huge fan of the art, but it's not terrible either.

Excited about potential Shadow Beast figures, though!

Good, that will make it easier to get hold of a copy for those of us wanting the mini-comic but not planning on collecting the figures

I was hoping Axel would be doing the comics as well as the packaging art, but this could be cool.

You mean from the pages? There are couple homage-panels in there to Roboto's minicomic and Terror Claws Skeletor minicomic.

This is so totally amazing and I LOVE the artwork. I hope all the new mini-comics will be collected together into a book just like the classic mini-comics were.

I like the art ,it looks fresh and seems aimed at children.

Isn't it time for origins to get its own section?

Yeah, I like the art, too, for all the reasons you mentioned. And yes, the mods have confirmed that Origins will get its own forum. I'm guessing it’s coming relatively soon.

Glad to see they have a 200x look to the art; I'm not collecting these figures but hopefully the Mini-Comics will be easy enough to get second hand

I have a feeling they will be if they're doing only one comic per wave. A lot of people are going to have duplicates.

I think they nailed the tone, pitch, story etc. Really feels like a vintage mini-comic.

My only conrn is the length - 6 pages? Thats not much to tell a story in, especially if it needs to be an 'add' to sell a whole wave of figures. If I never encountered these characters before I'm not 'learning' much about them with the exception of he-man here. It's not enough pages to profile the character you just brought.
I hope they expand future ones to 10 pages (ie add an extra folded sheet).

I think it does a good job of explaining most of them. Prince Adam is He-Man, but Teela doesn't know, Skeletor wants the secrets of Castle Grayskull, Teela's in charge of some sort of security force, Beast Man can control animals, and Evil-Lyn is like evil witch woman. The only one they don't explain is Man-At-Arms, and he's self explanatory because of the name.

Also, I'm really wishing they would have used the cuff-less arms from the wrestling line for Adam.

They should be if there is only one per wave. Should be a lot of extras floating around.

I wonder if Adam will have a sheath. Like, it's in the minicomic, and I believe we've seen a promo pic with the sword on his back.

Unless it was added on recently, probably not. All the pics of him from NYTF don’t show one. Also that’s where we found out his vest was plastic not soft goods. I plan on repainting it a darker maroon colour so I may add a piece like the Classics Prince Adam prototype had.

Also seeing He-Man in hand, the sword will probably have the handle guard now and be a half sword.

So the new mini-comics are only 6 pages? I'm glad they exist, but holy cow that seems short. At that length, it seems like every comic would almost have to be the same page by page structure.

    Page 1: Bad guys plan
    Page 2: Heroes derping around
    Page 3: Bad Guys attack
    Page 4: He-man transforms
Page 5: He-man beats everyone up
Page 6: Bad guys retreat/Thank goodness for He-man

Weren't the vintage minicomics like 2 (or more) times this length?

A very different art style than we're all used to. I think we've been spoilt by the art of Axel for so long and this sudden change in style is going to take some getting used to for some.

Will kids like it? Im sure they will. It has a younger appeal I think. The story... well yes its VERY simplified. But what can you expect for 6 pages of story? Minis of old were double the length and thus were able to tell a decent story.

What I do think lets this comic down massively is the lettering!! Lots of amatuer mistakes... odd shaped bubbles, text not centred and arranged properly, speech bubbles out of order...

But on the whole its something fresh and new. I wonder if they will be consistent wave to wave or if they will use different art teams
