Masters of the Universe Origins artwork official discussion thread

A new age of Masters of the Universe began in 2019 when Mattel released the SDCC MOTU Origins Prince Adam & He-Man 2-Pack. The artwork was produced by Axel Gimenez, Nate Baertsch, and myself (Val Staples).
The comic was written by Tim Seeley and lettered by Ed Dukeshire, and flats by Raunak Singh.

You know, I made up my mind and accepted a while back that I wasn't going to try to hunt down this pack because the price has been out of control... and I guess in doing so, had totally forgotten about the presentation and this amazing artwork. Now I'm wanting it all over again! Fingers crossed something similar is in store for this year's Power-Con 5-pack (which I did manage to pre-order, ahead of Covid-19 financial woes!).

Pleased to say I got the SDCC set for a very respectable price on eBay way back when. It really is beautiful.

I love that motel opted to put real artwork on the stuff, harkening back to the vintage days. That Axel is behind it makes it even better!

Yeah I looked at Ebay the other day and it looks like you can't get that set for less than $300! I really want to get it but I just can't justify spending that much money for it.

TBF, I got it ages ago. I actually pre-ordered it, just after it was announced. It was a very reasonable price. But yes, I would imagine its going for insane amounts of money now.

Yeah, the packaging is just as beautiful, if not more so, than the figures themselves!

I got a set from someone who attended the Con and loved it so much that I immediately went to eBay and purchased another before the prices started skyrocketing!

One of my motives was to get the vintage He-Man head for both the SDCC figure as well as the mass market figure. (This was before we found out that the flesh tones are so different...)

Anyway, this thread is fantastic. I am loving the artwork on these cards!!

There is very little not to like with Origins... other than their present availability!

This is the first time I read that comic insert with the two pack. I absolutely love the simple story and art, I see a lot of homages to the original mini-comics. I appreciate some of the wording about Skeletor being from another world, etc. I hope the sword will be split in half.

One thing, though. I see the back of Skeletor's armor is similar to the Alcala first four mini-comics, which I understand was based on the original Lords or Power-type of designs. However, I was hoping that the actual figures for origins would be based on this art, just like how the Origins figure of He-Man's armor is very similar to that design. So here's my question: why is the Origins Skeletor figure's armor like that vintage figure three-band armor back instead of the original design seen here in the art? This bothers me especially since the Origins He-Man's armor actually IS like that design. I get that the Origins are more homaging the vintage, but I was never a fan of the three-strap-harness back from the first vintage wave.

Back to the art: again, I hope to see a continuation of homages to Alcala. Thank you so much for the attention to detail and love of the property.

Give the line some time to flourish...

With unique artwork on the back of every card and front of large-scale items, plus a new comic added to each wave of figures - a collection of MOTU Origins artwork is not out of the question!

This is the first I’ve seen of the Trap-Jaw card art—- interesting that Ram-Man appears, I hope that’s a sign he’ll be produced for Origins.

It's kinda funny that these figures are meant for kids of this generation, but they are introducing images of characters on the cardbacks like Mer Man & Ram Man that we as vintage fans know from the get go, bit no figures have been revealed. I also think it's interesting that they are showing the older versions of Randor and Marlana from the vintage mini-comics. It seems like Mattel is trying to make the characters more of a slant directed towards the mini comics of the earlier years, but if that was the case, the they should have made Trap Jaw with the green skin, sliver arm, and weird colored fuzzy shorts.

I love how Trap-Jaw is using the "hidden" zip-line feature from the vintage figure!

Also, my man Rammy! I wonder if Mattel will stick with the orange color scheme?

The art also seems to tell the story that Prince Adam is a more proactive warrior and doesn’t play the shrinking violet. I’m interested to learn more about this; it’s a lot more interesting than the whole “this looks like a job for super — Er, I mean He-Man!” thing.

I wanted to use the Skeletor art as wallpaper on my laptop, so I made a couple of quick & easy tweaks to the lighting so the lava and his red eyes would have a bit more "glow." Figured I'd share in case anyone else wants to use it.

I agree. After all, some of that training with Teela and Duncan should be put to use. No need to follow the Filmation portrayal in this new line, IMHO.

So far, I'm getting the impression this is like an amalgamation of the minicomics and Filmation.

Yeah, it does seem to be a blend of the two. Kind of makes sense, as they are the two most popular "versions" of MOTU.
