Masters of the Universe Origins artwork official discussion thread

A new age of Masters of the Universe began in 2019 when Mattel released the SDCC MOTU Origins Prince Adam & He-Man 2-Pack. The artwork was produced by Axel Gimenez, Nate Baertsch, and myself (Val Staples).
The comic was written by Tim Seeley and lettered by Ed Dukeshire, and flats by Raunak Singh.

You know, I made up my mind and accepted a while back that I wasn't going to try to hunt down this pack because the price has been out of control... and I guess in doing so, had totally forgotten about the presentation and this amazing artwork. Now I'm wanting it all over again! Fingers crossed something similar is in store for this year's Power-Con 5-pack (which I did manage to pre-order, ahead of Covid-19 financial woes!).

Pleased to say I got the SDCC set for a very respectable price on eBay way back when. It really is beautiful.

I love that motel opted to put real artwork on the stuff, harkening back to the vintage days. That Axel is behind it makes it even better!

Yeah I looked at Ebay the other day and it looks like you can't get that set for less than $300! I really want to get it but I just can't justify spending that much money for it.

TBF, I got it ages ago. I actually pre-ordered it, just after it was announced. It was a very reasonable price. But yes, I would imagine its going for insane amounts of money now.

Yeah, the packaging is just as beautiful, if not more so, than the figures themselves!

I got a set from someone who attended the Con and loved it so much that I immediately went to eBay and purchased another before the prices started skyrocketing!

One of my motives was to get the vintage He-Man head for both the SDCC figure as well as the mass market figure. (This was before we found out that the flesh tones are so different...)

Anyway, this thread is fantastic. I am loving the artwork on these cards!!

There is very little not to like with Origins... other than their present availability!

FANTASTIC art!!! I really wish we could have a MOTU comic book with a great story, and art with that level of quality.

I think it would be great if Mattel 're-released' this set for the general public. They could make it a less fancy box set without all the bells and whistles, and sell it for 30 bucks. Maybe give Prince Adam a blue plastic jacket instead of soft goods, just to make it a little different.

But that's probably not going to happen.

This is the first time I read that comic insert with the two pack. I absolutely love the simple story and art, I see a lot of homages to the original mini-comics. I appreciate some of the wording about Skeletor being from another world, etc. I hope the sword will be split in half.

One thing, though. I see the back of Skeletor's armor is similar to the Alcala first four mini-comics, which I understand was based on the original Lords or Power-type of designs. However, I was hoping that the actual figures for origins would be based on this art, just like how the Origins figure of He-Man's armor is very similar to that design. So here's my question: why is the Origins Skeletor figure's armor like that vintage figure three-band armor back instead of the original design seen here in the art? This bothers me especially since the Origins He-Man's armor actually IS like that design. I get that the Origins are more homaging the vintage, but I was never a fan of the three-strap-harness back from the first vintage wave.

Back to the art: again, I hope to see a continuation of homages to Alcala. Thank you so much for the attention to detail and love of the property.

Give the line some time to flourish...

With unique artwork on the back of every card and front of large-scale items, plus a new comic added to each wave of figures - a collection of MOTU Origins artwork is not out of the question!

These are absolutely fantastic! Thank you so much for getting this artwork and posting it here. Any chance you can do the same for the Masters of the WWE Universe art? That is great art as well and MOTU related.

Man, the artwork for these figures is awesome! The Evil Lyn and Teela art knocked it out of the park!

I agree. Even if it's a separate thread.

    Love that Teela art too.

    Wow!

I love me some yellow Evil-Lyn!!

Also of note, the depiction of King Randor keeps the vintage / SDCC 2-Pack / mini-comic design!!

I noticed that too. Wonder if we'll get an old man Randor/old lady Marlena in Origins? (as a side-note, I personally don't think this line will get that far...but who knows!)

I'm still excited that they chose to stick with the yellow for Evil-Lyn, rather than doing her pale like in Filmation in MYP. There could always be a variant down the road, but I've always loved her colors since I first got the first figure of her back in the '80s and can't wait to get this version, too! The art for her cardback came out great!

I wonder whether the older depiction of Randor and Marlena means we won’t see the younger, figure-version in this line. (Maybe we’d get him with the white hair as seen in the minicomic that came with him!).

A big part of meGenuinely hoped Origins follows a more mini-comic take on the story, with the older king and queen, a demonic Skeletor, and strange relics, artifacts, and lots of ghosts, goblins, and monsters. (I know those aren’t exclusive of that take, but you get the gist.)

We must be on the same wavelength!

I, too, would like to see a more mini-comic approach to the line... more Lovecraftian, sword and sorcery / fantasy elements versus the sci-fi ones.
