I think it’s why many are afraid of labels because we get told to use a phrase or word that blanket covers a whole group of people and then we find out that each of those individuals prefer not to be labelled as that.
Like Dan, he is happy and comfortable to identify as the M word but we are told we aren’t allowed to call him that, so in the end we offend him by doing the thing we’re told we must do. And then people avoid other Dans because they are scared of mislabelling them.
My son is 3/4 white and 1/4 Caribbean. In the 14 years since he’s been on the planet I have been told that he should be labelled in different ways from mixed race to dual heritage to biracial to multiracial. I asked him and he said let’s go with mixed race. So that’s how he refers to himself and that’s fine. Unless of course he’s been mildly told off and then it’s ‘hey is it cos I’m b****’ or ‘blm’. But that’s cos he’s gobsh***e and thinks he’s funny![]()
