You definitely have good ideas, but I think I can hold out for a few months, maybe I'll get a new laptop for Christmas and transfer everything from this one to the new one.

Yeah. I've been playing RPGs since 1986 when I got started with D&D.

D&D, AD&D and their worlds are still very much some of my favorite games and settings, but I've tried many many more over the years.
I've been lucky to be able to play twice a week ever since I started with more during vacations and school breaks and it is by far the one hobby I spend most of my time pursuing. Apart from just playing (and GMing) I also collect TSRs game lines, and try to pick up any new game or setting which I find interesting.

I prefer AD&D 2nd ed, but I'll gladly play any version except (A)D&D 4th ed.
I like kitchen sink type of games so two other games that are much to my liking is TORG (both the original and the new one) and Shadowrun.
In the end though the game (rules) are almost irrelevant, it's who you play with and if you're having fun.

Look for my aborted MOTU RPG that I will post at around new year's. I saw no need to continue when there's an official one coming.

You sound like a man after my own heart! Yes I've heard many, many good things about Shadowrun in particular, it's right up there on the list of RPG's that I want to try!

Re: D&D, I did my first-ever session as DM the other night, with a home-brew adventure, and it seemed to go very well! Doing it online via Roll20 makes things really easy to track. I'm still a relative newbie to the whole game and so have only ever played 5th edition, but I've heard from many folks that 4th edition was bad, hence how Pathfinder found a gap in the market.

Something that does tickle my fancy is "text-based" D&D adventuring, which is something lots of folks have started doing via Discord or specialist platforms - does anyone here have any experience of that?

I enjoy Lords of Waterdeep, and since my friends and I can't get together we play the online version. Other than that, I haven't been doing any RPG, but I have been enjoying the new digital version of Wingspan, a relaxing little game with colorful birds.

Funnily enough I've been thinking of forking out for the Lords of Waterdeep game app, it looks like a very faithful repro of the board game. And yep, I'm familiar with Wingspan although I haven't had chance to play it yet - however, loads of my friends have and they all say it's very good.

I'm a big fan of RPGs, but I rarely get to play any more. I was most active with the World of Darkness stuff, Vampire, Werewolf, Mage, Wraith, all that. I do like me some D&D but kinda stopped after 3.5. I still dream of being able to paint miniatures again - I have considered getting a 3D printer to make stuff for them, but again, never get to play any more.

There was apparently a tabletop RPG based off of Watership Down, where the characters were all rabbits. I forget the link to where you could buy a pdf of the rules, but if i recall correctly, it was intended to be a bit cerebral since even the most "warrior" of rabbits isn't a huge match for, say, a badger.

Yeah. As far as I know that basic type of playing has been around for a long time, starting on the bulletin board system days. Some play in a chat, such as IRC, where it's instant, other's play it on forums where the pace is set by the game master/moderator, and others play by email.

The first type is basically a normal game, with text. I thing in most cases because microphones and voice over ip wasn't easily available when it got started. This is run with everyone online at the same time.

In the second players and Game Masters are more elaborate in their decriptions. It can be run either totally free, as in, people post whenever, or they may have a set response time, ie you have one full day to respond to a game master post and only those who have posted have their actions integrated into the next post.

In play by emails, the pace is usually slower with one post per week, with even more elaborations in decriptions and actions.

Just like RPGs in general, some play with rules set, others totally free form. There are also role playing of the type where it isn't adventure based, rather you create a persona and interact with other personas socially, like say a renneissance fair.

Large rpg online communities like rpg.net or enworld.org should have more info, and specifics.

I have tried the chat thing, play by email, persona playing but not forum playing. I prefer playing face to face and don't have time for more in my Life right now.

Pugmire and Monarchies of Mau add a bit of a twist to this, where you play an evolutionarily advanced dog or cat living in the ruins of what was once human civilization. Rats and mice are the bad guys, as well as various supernatural evils typical of D&D.

I got my Waterdeep + expansions through Steam and it wasn't very expensive. Wingspan cost $19.99 but it's worth it for the animated birds, gorgeous artwork, and user friendly interface. It's a lot like playing the tabletop game but better because the app reminds you to collect on your bird powers. I NEVER remember to collect my rewards or use all my advantages when playing in person.

used to play a lot in my teens......ad&d, warhammer fantasy roleplay (I think 2nd edition), a hybrid system that my group homebrewed, lots of games workshop games: dungeon quest, talisman, warhammer, 40k.

like most in the 90's Heroquest.

ran a gaming club at work about ten years ago for kids.....40k, heroquest, mordheim and necromunda campaigns.....some of the best fun I was ever paid to have!

these days working on stuff for Age of Sigmar, 40K, Necromunda and digging out my old copies of Mordheim: fantasy skirmish campaigns game and the 90's version of Warhammer Quest......probably the finest dungeon bash game ever devised. ( Copies on ebay cost a fortune as its so highly thought of as it can be as simple as you like or you can expand it into a fully detailed rpg game).
Hoping for figures of: King Hsss slave girl, Major Header, Hans Hammerholder, Bubblor, Lady slither, Redeye, grr, Kayla, Gorgonne and the myp giants.

Grimsword looks like he'll fit right in as some kinda enforcer for the Snake Men!

Yeah, even with a slight size difference, I think he'd work well in that role.

My biggest hope is that Neca secures the Animated Series rights to produce articulated figures of the cartoon characters! (Especially before Super 7 gets their dirty mitts on it...)

It would be incredibile if NECA could make the cartoon characters.

    Also a proper scaled Tiamat.

I like that Neca left the snake tail weapon holder on Grimsword. Originally that was the button for the waist swivel action feature for the warrior to use his flail. The 8 year old in me is very happy to finally be able to use that cool curved dagger on War Duke. I hope these sell well enough for us to at least get the first wave of the old LJN figures. North Lord, Ogre King, Melf, Mericon, and Karak are my biggest wants.

Definitely. NECA really need to start making some generic and fantasy horses for their figures.

D&D is great fun to play. I play with friends online via Roll20 and am currently in two weekly games, tho one of them may be changing to every two weeks because of other obligations on the part of the DM.

In the first game I play -

Dhal E'marr - a 7 year old Kobold. He is a level 8 Warlock and level 1 sorcerer who also happens to be a werewolf.

    my other character is

Vikus Dolin - 15 year Red Dragonborn - A level 6 Rogue of the Arcane Trickster persuasion.

Anyone have pics of the old D&D toys made in the 80's. I had a hydra, fire elemental, roper, and maybe something else.

My personal restored collection. It is NOT complete and missing a few figures. War Duke and Grimmy are in there. FoF is still a work in progress and not pictured in here. Hope you enjoy, share as you like.

I think by binge-watching a lot of D&D games on Youtube? I love the possibility of online tabletop, especially giving out "visual" table for it with verbal instruction. Gotta say when it comes to role playing? Critical Roles gave out the funniest one, can't go wrong if Travis Willingham, Laura Bailey, Matt Mercer, Taliesin Jaffe and Liam O'Brien enter the game with expectation of chaotic sessions.

Playing a three-hour Rush show is like running a marathon while solving equations.
