Getting a new roof soon and worried about colllectables

I am likely getting a new roof in the next couple of months and I am worried about my MOTUC and other collectables on my shelves. Has anyone else had a roof replaced here? What, if any, preventative measures did you take for collectables or other valuable items? Did anything inside your house damaged? Most of my collectables are mint on card and in clamshells, but that still likely won't protect them if they take any tumbles off shelves. Most of my shelving isn't attached to walls (more plastic utility type shelving for my collectables), which I am not sure is a plus or a minus, since I could see things still tumbling over or even worse the shelves themselves. Most of my collectables are in a room on my second floor. I'll probably need to box things up, but it won't be fun.

A new roof as in just new shingles? Or are you talking about taking it all the way down to the rafters and installing new sheathing?

We had our roof replaced last summer so we could put in a work room and the attic space was left covered in dust and bits and pieces. Not a complaint we expected mess. The second floor of the house suffered no mess as a result of getting a new roof. So if you’re collectibles are the floor below your roof space they shouldn’t suffer any ill effects that I know about. But there is always a risk

I just had my roof replaced on my single story at the beginning of December. They removed two layers of old shingles, some plywood, and trim then replaced with new. Other than being a little loud from demo and install, no issues. I have all my figures loose on IKEA’s lack shelves and not one of them fell off. There was some pretty hard pounding. I do put my figures on stands too though.

My garage did get filthy since it is attached with exposed rafters (no attic or ceiling unlike rest of house). There were wood shards, old shingle granules, and dirt every where. Once roof was finished, I opened the garage door and blew out most the grime with a leaf blower.

Dust is your enemy. I'd suggest you cover everything with sheets, then remove the sheets and wash them after the job is done.

Same as the others. Had a complete re-roof several years ago and not a worry except the garage. Unless your house is really old or built on stilts, you shouldn’t have too much to worry about. Maybe throw some thin plastic drop cloths over stuff if your ceiling is plaster.

Replacing all the old shingles with new ones. I don't think it will be more than that unless they find some damage underneath the old ones. The main person in charge said it would sound like WW3 with all the nail guns going off and that we might want to leave the house for awhile. I may stick around for a bit early on to see how things are going inside, though. I did move some of my collectibles off the high shelves on the second floor.

Don't know how practical this would be ... but, you could box your collection, and leave them with a relative or family member until the work has been completed.

We had a leak in a section on the back of our house, so we had the back half of the house redone. My Super Nerd Collector Room (TM) on the second floor had no issues and nearly all of my collections are unboxed and on shelves now. This is a picture of the room from a while back, before I added more shelves and unboxed everything. The leak in the roof was actually in a corner of the room to the right out of sight.

It may be worthwhile to call your insurance company and add a rider to your homeowners policy for your collection if you’re not already covered.
