I wonder if this is the cliff notes version of previous books with a little bit of the new shows thrown in.

Seems that way. Still, great jumping on point, right?

I assume this is going to be a lot like the same publisher's "The Star Trek Book" from five years ago. I bought that at the time. You can use the Amazon "Look Inside" feature to get a sense of how they present the content. These DK books, in my judgment, seem like valuable references for readers who have minimal prior knowledge of the property, but for us hardcores who have been immersed in the universe for a minute by now, you get less bang for your buck.

... And then there's that old gaffe, "sneak peak," in the official description of this one. Yes, we all make slip-ups, but this doesn't bode well for the attention to detail of the actual book's text. I hold the editing to a high standard when it's a promotional blurb asking for my book-buying money.

DK books are generally phenomenally made visual guides to a wide variety of subjects. I'm very confident this book will be great based on that alone.

DK books are good reference books. I remember having ones for Batman, X-Men and Spider-Man when I was a kid. I would say they're mostly for kids, young teenagers and/or people with very limited knowledge of the subject at hand. Whereas the Dark Horse books are for the more "specialist fans", this will probably be for the casual fan. Depending on what it ends up looking like, I may give it a go.

They have had some duds, but in general, the DK style books are great.

The Lego DC Heroes book, the Guardians of the Galaxy book, and the Arkham Asylum book all come to mind.

However, some of their Marvel books, e.g. Fantastic Four and Hulk, leave a lot to be desired...

Definitely. I think it would have been really cool if they used maybe a combination of the three logos for that. Or even just one of the logos.

Yes, with that font it looks like an unofficial book. Weird.

Lettering and layout for cover purposes is an artform to itself.

Yes that is the official font from 80s toys and cartoon episodes.

But, on that note, they are using wrong "weight" on it, and the placement currently screams "add text - but fix it later"

True. It's always possible that this is a placeholder / they will make some changes later on. I remember that happened with the She-Ra: Origin of a Hero book. I found a cover image in a Scholastic Canada catalog that was different than what was ultimately released.

Over 30 years is an odd choice. Why not say "nearly 40 years" it's more accurate and makes a bolder statment.
