As I recall, the Mike Young Productions (MYP) incarnation of He-Man billed itself as going back to the beginning and telling the story leading up to the events depicted in the Filmation series.

    Nope.

    That never happened.

The official premise that we were given before the pilot-movie aired, was
    "
On Friday August 16th, the 90-minute movie premiere will tell the story of how Prince Adam became He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe, for the very first time."

But they made no "connection" to Filmation in any press release. (Which is why ep12 was a shocker to many fans, in a good way)

Over the years... fans who didn't remember Filmation episodes all too well, came to the notion that could MYP be a prequel to Filmation(?) - Which simply doesn't hold up at all.

Ah, thanks Jukka - I obviously misremembered, or made that misinterpretation myself at the time. (Can't believe it's been nearly 20 years!) I will amend the review to correct that.

    Good review.

Makes me want to re-watch the series again. We started to back in September/October but got distracted halfway through. May as well start all over again one of these days.

    Glad you enjoyed!

It's a great series - writing these reviews was the first time I'd seen it (or all of it, I'd caught a few when it was first aired) and I was surprised how much I liked it.

The episode doesn’t really dwell on a surprising revelation from Part 1: no one specifically says it out loud, but we have here learned that Skeletor is Randor’s brother...

To clarify, nowhere in Episode 1 is there said that Skeletor is Randor’s half-brother. They say nothing about being related to each other.

Not a single character alludes that.

Fans who may have read vintage minicomic would know that it was hinted Keldor (not blue skin, not older brother) is someone Randor was searching.
(though since MYP is a reboot, it negates to a degree any ”we learned this”.... see Man-E-Faces origin in Filmation VS MYP, or others..)

Thanks Jukka! I've just re-watched The Beginning Part 1, and you're quite right (not surprisingly - your knowledge is encyclopaedic!)

I must have linked the minicomic reference to Keldor being Randor's brother with this episode, and then done the whole assume making an ass of u and me thing...

I'll stick a note in the review to clarify.

I find it bonkers that the first episode used the Randor's brother Keldor backstory from a vintage mini-comic and the show never once says that they're brothers.

But we all know that it was going to come out maybe season 3 or 4...

Just like the Horde was going to be the big bads for Season 3...

Why don't they continue this series as a direct to video/dvd/blu ray release?

Marvel is going to continue the 90's X-Men series SO it could be done....

Fun fact, it stems from the he-man.org "Opening the Vault" interview, actually. Which was done in 2000/2001. Where the minicomic writer finally revealed that it was a last minute "tacked on" thing, that Skeletor used to be keldor, and Unnamed One was involved. Sorta like Palpatin to Keldor's anakin...

Yeah, I have no doubt that the more episodes we would've gotten, they would clearly say it in an episode.

Marvel is going to continue the 90's X-Men series SO it could be done....
He-Man at the end of the day, is a niche property.
The 200x DVD sales were good for example, but nothing like Family Guy sales. Most fans at the time used FG as an example that why couldn't there be direct-to-dvd animated film or just continue the series.
But the analogy is not the best one.

We are maybe *now* for the first time in a long, long while seeing Mattel PUSH for MOTU. Toys on retail shelves, 2 animated series on Netflix, etc. And even with these, when you look at it, they are focusing on either hardcored vintage things. Or they are creating something fresh and new. (In the grand scheme of things, 200x reboot falls somewhere in the middle... it is remembered fondly for the story, but it was not a huge success from toyline standpoint, which is at the end of the day, why the cartoon was made. To help promote the toys at the time. And when toysales were not what Mattel maybe hoped for, and as toyline was ending, then they simply didn't order anymore episodes either.)

Sadly, I fear you're right. I'd love for a continuation to the MYP story - it had so much potential. But I very much doubt we'll ever see one, especially given the sad passing of Dean Stefan a few years back. And outside fandom, I don't imagine anyone really remembers the 200x series.

Here's my review of the first regular episode of the series: The Courage of Adam. Unfortunately, I wouldn't call it a highlight.

Everyone on here collectively lost their **** over Marzo and Miro (two Filmation characters) that day...

This is very cool... I just finished another 200X MYP rewatch, so with those fresh in my mind it will be cool to see how your perspectives match with mine.

I'll be interested to hear too - I've really enjoyed the series so far but thought a couple of the later first season eps were duds. I'd like to know if that's a widely shared opinion!

At this point, I'd settle for a comic series wrapping up the storyline.

There are certain people I'd rather not see be involved in that, but really, I'd just like a lot of loose ends tied up, and a final resolution to the storyline. Preferably without POP ever being mentioned.

Today's review, The Ties That Bind, sees Teela gaining telepathy but somehow not figuring out about Prince Adam being He-Man:

Gah! I'm all caught up on these now. They are hilarious... thank you for doing them!

I should have been making comments on the entries... maybe I'll start with the next post.
