You could say the same thing about 1982, when MOTU launched. I don't think there were any "pantless" action figures before that in the 60's and 70's.

Little boys have no frame of reference for a hero who doesn't wear pants and a shirt.
There was no frame of reference for that in 1982 either.

Tarzan? You might recognize the panthor, er... panther from that line.

Conan, The Sword and the Sorcerer, The Beastmaster, Thundarr, Tarzan, Gauntlet... anything by Frank Frazetta.

Oily buff dudes with swords had its place. But in the 80s you saw the hero journey story by non-typical archetype heroes. I've always thought that with video games becoming more popular, the hero archetype became more inclusive to make up a whole strata of types.

    Very true.

In terms of physique, the He-Man design reminds me of Hal Jordan from the old CGI series...

I’m liking these. They look fresh and interesting. I just hope that the animated series they are from sets the world alight. 🔥

It seems that the She-Ra series didn’t sadly do that. I hope that it gets a great deal of interest, Lord knows MOTU deserves that. Call me naive but I hope this is the time MOTU makes a triumphant return to the mainstream – like TMNT and Transformers and G.I. Joe.
    Yours most sincerely

Am I the only one who thinks Skeletor head has an unfinished looking quality? I know paint apps are costly but it looks like solid green plastic. It may look cool if the detailing had Been brought out but ... Just looks cheap in a bad way. And that is ignoring how much I hate his narrow, pinched face. I'll admit the fully rendered picture art on the box looks pretty interesting, so the show will look better. Toys I M assuming that are designed to be cheap and highly disposable for a very young audience. Which is fine.

Though I am a toy guy I am very much a cartoon guy and extremely forgiving and open minded on properties I care for. I do not have to like everything, I am just glad they are doing an insane ammount of media and product, really hope it raises his profile. Like I've always said about transformers and gi Joe, even when it is terrible at least it never (really) went away and got forgotten. Children always had generational context.

Mostly I just hop I enjoy the cartoon. I cannot lie, everything looks sorta bad, but there is a difference between writing for kids and writing down to kids. I appreciate the difference and am worried from the look which this will be. But it can be well written and if I like the show, I may, may buy some toys.

My girlfriend's 5 year old son loves CGI shows. There is some wacky Power Ranger type CGI show he watches all the time. That and Robot Trains.

Just like with Masterverse, I wonder if... there will be a mini-comic inside?!
    Probably not huh
It’s kind of a unique MOTU thing... I think it would be cool!

It doesn't look like there will be. I guess only Origins will have minicomics. However, I believe there will be some books set in the universe of the show, like the ones She-Ra Princesses of Power had.

Does anyone else feel like Moss Man and Evil-Lyn look like they are from a completely different toy line to He-Man and Skeletor?

Not so much Evil-Lyn, but definitely Moss Man. I think it's because I'm getting less a MOTU vibe from his toy redesign and more of a confusing "now, who's this guy? Is this supposed to be Swamp Thing or Man-Thing?"
Evil-Lyn at least has the familiar(ish) face, the hair color, the accessory (her wand) and the furry bit around her collar that we've seen around the top of MOTU boots but hey- what do you know- looks really good where they chose to repurpose that element.

I think if Moss Man had a straight-up "normal" MOTU belt and furry loincloth, it would help sell him a bit... but at the same time, I recognize they were trying to make him look composed of all organic matter from his head down to those John Carpenter's The Thing toes. I just don't like it.

Did I miss something? As far as I know we only seen them in Masterverse, which if thats right, then they are from different toylines than the He-Man and Skeletor that we see here.

I don't know. I'm not digging the He-Man toys, but I do kind of like the Skeletor one. Though I think the box art for Skeletor looks better. But remember this version of He-Man is supposed to be for a new generation of young fans. And at least Netflix and Mattel were upfront about that compared to DreamWorks. Or possibly Revelation, where it's supposed to be a sequel to the Original. It seems to me that Mattell is trying to appease the old fans with Revelation, while also building new fans with this reboot. I just wish we got more information for it. I mean we know that He-Man and Skeletor are going to be duking it out obviously, but what about the other characters like Man-At-Arms, or Teela, or Evil-Lyn, or what have you. Are they going to be in it, or are we getting completely new characters like with New Adventures?

Also, I just thought of this. Even though I highly doubt they'll do this considering how poorly Princesses of Power was received, but do you think Netflix will want to do a crossover between this reboot and that? The only reason why I ask is because this version of He-Man looks more sci-fi-oriented than most other versions before it, and Princesses of Power was a little more sci-fi than fantasy. Again, I don't think Netflix will do this, but Noelle Stevenson was pushing for a crossover with Revelation, and that didn't happen. I wonder if she'll try again with this...

    (
Adam, Teela, Duncan and Krass (Ram Man) are all teens who get the Power of Grayskull. Battle Cat is still a guy named Cringer (Legends From Castle Grayskull graphic novel coming from Scholastic).
When this was first announced, a Mattel executive mentioned He-Man's allies "like Roboto, Extendar and Gwildor." That's less firm.

Wait, Adam's not the only one who got the Power? There will be more Grayskull Powered Individuals like He-Man and She-Ra? Also, Cringer is going to be a person that gets turned into the Battle Cat that we know and love? Looks like I'll have to wait until this graphic novel comes out to find out what the heck is going on. Thanks for telling me though. I greatly appreciate it.

SPOP wasn't poorly received, though. It was nominated for a ton of awards, won an Emmy, and also won a GLAAD award. It also generally received good reviews. I know it's not something most people here are particularly fond of, but it did well with general audiences.

True, Princesses of Power did win awards but I'm not sure how though. Most people I know didn't like it, and if they did, like me, because they just considered it is own show or just a couple of the characters. Overall as a reboot and its own show, it wasn't that great. But hey, as you said, the general audience has a different opinion. That and Classic fans were pretty upset when they pretty much dropped the bomb on how Princesses of Power was going to be completely different from the original Princess of Power series and the very little respect to downright disdain that most of the cast and crew were showing towards the original. At least with this new version of He-Man, Mattel and Netlfix were pretty much upfront on how this version of He-Man is going to be very different than previous incarnations and creating new toys for them pretty quickly. With Princesses of Power, the dolls didn't come in until halfway through or towards the end of the show's run, and nobody really bought them, and they looked very cheap. The DC Superhero Girls and Monster High dolls looked better than the 2018 She-Ra dolls. I kid you not, they're worth almost if not over $100 on Amazon or other online stores now, and the show's been over for a year. Then, not even a month after the show ended, new Classic and Origins Masters of the Universe and She-Ra toys exploded like crazy. That kind of tells me that Princesses of Power didn't do as well as Dreamworks or Noelle Stevenson said it was doing.

To be honest, this all sounds like it's going to be a little TOO different for my tastes. But then I'm never a huge fan of reboots in general. I'm never big on wholesale reinvention of a thing, more about "Keep what works and expand on it while downplaying things that maybe didn't work so well, but no need to reinvent the wheel." I think - and have often said - that when you rely on the "New Wheel" method of rebooting or relaunching something, you inherently run the risk of alienating a large chunk of your fans who are already invested in your property. MOTU, TMNT, G.I. Joe, Thundercats, whatever... everyone likes these things for Reasons, and while those reasons vary it remains true for every individual that if too many of the things they personally like about A Thing are removed, or changed beyond recognition, that those individuals now have less investment and are less likely to enjoy the New Version of Their Thing.

This is what happened to me with New Adventures. As an adult, I can respect it for what it is, and objectively on its own merits, it's not a bad show by any means. But as a kid, I hated it, because it was just TOO different. Nothing I liked about He-Man and MOTU was left of it in the "New Coke" version of He-Man, and while I can understand and accept that it was entirely by design, it was absolutely, 100% NOT what I wanted to see. And even as an adult who's more objective, reasonable, and willing to take things on their own merit, it's STILL my least-favorite version of He-Man by default, for the same reasons as when I was a kid: There's a blonde guy with a sword, but past that there's just nothing I recognize as "He-Man" in it. There's things I loved about the character and the larger brand, and Those Things simply aren't there in New Adventures. For me, calling it "He-Man" simply wasn't/isn't enough.

So frankly, I'm concerned that the CGI series will be another "In Name Only" reboot that only pays superficial respect to the things I love about the property, with the excuse that it's "A New Version" that "isn't for me, anyway." Granted, it's their show and they can ultimately do whatever they please with it. Selfishly, I would HOPE that the reboot has more in common with the brand I love than just character names, and the fact that there's a Castle Grayskull.

I will keep an eye on it, but frankly I'll be surprised if I end up being into it. I kind of have a bad feeling that it might supersede New Adventures as my least favorite. I'm not ROOTING for that, I just have a gut feeling that may be what ultimately happens, based on my own personal taste. We'll see.
    ----------------

Without getting too deep into the She-Ra reboot conversation - as such conversations seem to be quickly shut down outside of that forum section - it's my understanding that the show aimed very hard to please a Very Specific Audience, and it did that. I am not surprised that it did so well with the exact audience it was aiming for, but it also didn't register very much outside of that audience and I don't think that's surprising, either. To say that it satisfied those it was designed to satisfy would be true, but should also be expected. To say that it was a huge success otherwise, though, might be reaching a bit.

Kinda like Rise of the TMNT. It was a "success" by the very vague metrics Nickelodeon relied on to call it that, but in the grand scheme of things, did "Rise" sell toys, get good ratings, make money, and/or create a large audience of "new fans" for the brand? Not at all. But some people liked it, ergo it was "successful", if you ask Nick and the people who liked the show. Others feel differently based on other metrics. I'd personally call "Rise" a colossal failure, and not only because I personally didn't like it but more because it didn't make money or grow the brand. It was built to sell toys, and those toys failed to sell, and the ratings were a disaster the entire time it was on, so I personally don't know how anyone could say it was "successful". BUT, some people do claim that, mostly because "It gets a lot of love on Facebook and Twitter", which... okay, then. If that's the bar, then alright.

Point being, there's levels of "success" and it greatly varies depending on your definition of the word. Sometimes, you're "successful" simply by reaching the audience you set out to please, even if you fall short in several other key areas that might define the term.

I like your post because of how level headed you are are exploring your take and acknowledge there are other successes than pleasing the hard core fan base. :-)

Bringing back old properties is dicey, always a balancing act, sometimes relaunches / reboots are swaying more strongly one way or the other. I also hope I can feel some of the magical Masters vibe I personally love, but ultimately, trying to keep an open mind.

I did want to mention though that I did love the NA series, even though I was a huge fan of the original MOTU. I had some mixed emotions, but especially nowadays I appreciate it. (Granted, I also read some comics with it back in the day, that helped smooth the transition for me.)

I also really liked Princesses of Power. I felt it was fairly different, but on its own, I loved it.

So there are those of us :-)

With this new one, I am expecting it to be quite different as well. But if it is well done in its own way, and can perhaps bring new things that are actually exciting, I think there will be some of us who can enjoy it.
And, as a Netflix kids series with a contemporary look, I do strongly believe it can bring some new children to MOTU. Not on the level of the 80s, but something.
