I've seen many people cite this as one of several things that disappointed them about MOTU: R, but I confess that I find it a bit odd. It was very clear to me early on that the whole "It's like a Filmation sequel" was just marketing spin and nothing to be taken literally.

I don't know, just curious. I do think they never should have even brought Filmation into the conversation to begin with, but I'm a bit baffled why anyone got hung up on such a clearly-false statement. Like it was clearly false weeks (if not months) before the show aired.

((Shrug)) Just curious, feel free not to answer.
They have also said it was a spiritual sequel as in it will have the same spirt as the media of the 80s. Weather they succeed will be up those who saw it but making a show that tried to capture the essence of that time would naturally include the Filmation series. Although I never saw it was a direct sequel given how much of what happen in the Filmation continuity was ignored.

Every release said something slightly different from direct sequel to spiritual successor to its all about He-Man etc etc it was an absolute cluster and IMO Netflix’s deserved the backlash the got but the one thing they were consistent about was it was a love letter to fans of the original.

For the vast majority of people Filmation IS MotU, why would anyone take it any other way is the real question.

Anyway, I’m so over Revelation. If you liked it great, I just don’t care about it enough to want to discuss pros and cons, I’m only answering this out of courtesy cause you seem like a decent bloke.

I was tying to get away from Revelation in the new CGI thread lol
I relent that this isn't the appropriate thread to discuss it, but I felt like asking since it was a "Hey, since I've got you..." kind of moment.

I don't know. To me the whole "It's a Filmation sequel" thing ONLY ever sounded like Smith getting too excited and saying dumb things, things he thought people would want to hear. The fact that they immediately went "Well... I mean it ISN'T actually, but..." was good enough for me to accept that it wasn't going to have anything to do with Filmation except some of the character designs. And I do question why anyone, anywhere, thought it actually was going to be a "real" sequel or follow-up, to the point where they'd be so mad that it wasn't. "Because they said so... ONE time!" kind of doesn't seem like enough. Because to their "credit", they immediately took it back.

I don't know. There's plenty about that show that is worthy of debate but that one point seems kind of like making a mountain out of a molehill, to me. They probably only ever even said it at all because "It's like a hybrid of Filmation with the 200X reboot" is very clunky from a marketing perspective, even if it's about a thousand times more accurate to what the show actually is. Plus, "nobody" watched the 200X show so I'm not shocked the marketing folks didn't bring it up, even though they might've saved themselves some scorn if they had.

So again, "since I've got you" and because I'm genuinely curious... if they had said THAT, instead - That MOTU:R was a Filmation/200X hybrid, which is more accurate - would you dislike the series AS much? I mean I'm sure there's other things about it which you don't like, and that's fine, I'm not really wondering about any of that. I'm simply asking whether or not you'd dislike it AS much if that one bit of marketing spin were changed.

Thank you for taking the time to indulge my curiosity, it's very much appreciated.

They said lots of stuff. Including "We're trying to recapture what it FELT like to watch Filmation at 3, 4, 5 years old... the show had no actual stakes, but at that age you could believe there were." That, to me, was the most honest bit of "spin" they put out.

Anything being a "spiritual sequel" means "It's not really, but maybe if you squint and fudge some details." Which means it simply isn't.

It was the whole bundle, the fact it wasn’t a “direct sequel” to Filmation was probably the least offensive.

Blatantly lying about sidelining He-Man then using mental gymnastics to justify it, Smith lying about almost everything, inserting identity politics, the story, SMG voice acting, half the dialogue, the rushed story trying to put too much into it…. Pretty much everything except the animation and music and the techno cult, that kinda makes sense in a world now devoid of magic.

I probably have more reason to try and like it than most here, my wife works for Netflix and I don’t like not supporting a company that contributes to our financial situation….it feels dirty but I’m not going to lie plus there is a heap of other Netflix stuff I do like, I just don’t like this iteration of MoTU, it’s just not for me. Not every show is for everyone.

I’m hoping they redeem themselves with the second half but the whole “focus shifts to Evil-Lyn” has me worried it’s going to be more of the same.

The character art on the box looks very cool, especially Skeletor's design. Duncan's design has me scratching my head, but I'm sure the show will give more context to this (maybe it's a full suit for a certain function and after that is fulfilled he begins to convert it into Roboto).
I really like that Skeletor design!

I'm excited for this show and the figures that accompany it.

The Filmation sequel argument is a very weak crutch for people to place their "outrage" on since everything else is drying up...

Did Kevin Smith insinuate the Filmation show? Maybe. But, I think it's funny how when they are all up-in-arms because youtube told them to be, these people quickly forget that the 80's also had mini-comics, Ladybird, Golden books, DC comics, the motion picture, the fanzine, the actual action figures, etc...

I was going to make the Samus comparison but(this is just my speculation) maybe Man at arms new look is inspired by the armor in Grayskull

Edit: Actually looking at them side by side there are few similarities.

    Thank you for the answer.

I feel obligated to point out that they did reveal He-Man being "absent" as a central plot point at some point last year, and that I personally don't feel like "identity politics" were an issue in this project (I definitely see them in plenty of other things and have loudly cried "foul" about them in those cases, but I sincerely didn't get that vibe in this case).

Buuuuut that's a whole other can of worms and I more or less got the answer to my question. Thank you again for your reply, we can all move on at leisure.

Yeah, see, that's where I'm at with it. To me MOTU:R is like a hodge-podge of everything. Which I like. I actually think I like that approach better than what a full-blown "true" FIlmation sequel would've been like, but that's just me.

Perhaps if they'd been more upfront about it being a "composite universe", some people would've been less annoyed. Sadly, we'll never know. If I were Smith or whoever, that's what I would've said; "It's got a little bit of Everything in it, it's not just like any one thing." It's clunkier, but more honest.

I also sincerely don't think they "lied" with intent to "trick" anyone, or out of any sort of deception or malice, but simply because the things they said "rolled off the tongue" easier and they didn't think they'd be taken quite so literally. But again, that's just what my gut says and I could be wrong about that. I don't read minds so I don't know.

Good news for me is that there are smaller figures for me to get. I was concerned about shelf space.

Idk about Skeletor's motorcycle, but He-Man's is the Road Ripper (and Battle Cat is more of a standalone character in the new series).

OK. I see that does say Ground Ripper on the box, so that makes more sense. I still think it looks like a cat. Those look like claws on the front.

Nice to get a look at Trap-Jaw too!

Nice to see Skeletor is finally getting his mid-life crisis out of the way and buying that motorcycle he's wanted since he was a teenager. That is one weird-ass looking TrapJaw. These designs are so funky that I kinda dig 'em!

Do we know how this main line will scale? I could see having some alongside Origins as sort of a Multiverse play pattern, which my kid and nephew get a kick out of.

"The new toy line includes a full range of 5.5-inch basic action figures with Power Attack features; a He-Man and Ground Ripper vehicle; Skeletor with vehicle; 8.5-inch action figures; Battle Armor He-Man; and the Chaos Snake Attack throne room playset."

It kinda looks like it there (where did you get that pic?), but here's a clearer pic of it from Toyark:

That pic was just a zoom in from the link in this thread , it's a lot less like classic man at arms in the clearer pic you posted though . Thought I'd discovered an Easter egg then
