How can I tell if a Horde Trooper staff is a repro?

I bought a trooper, but I'm afraid the accessory may be fake. What are the tells to spot a repro?

If it's a really good repro it might be hard to tell, but most of them will be a little bit off in color, and the plastic won't bend the same way - most of the time they will be more rigid than an original.

The one I have is very bendy, but the color doesn't look right. I really thought the staff was the same color as the red inside the chest.

If it floats in water it's usually original. This isn't 100% accurate but it's a good indicator if you think it looks off.

The original weapon doesn't exactly match the red on the figure. It's more translucent and brighter red than the paint color. Post some pics here

    It floats...

    Not rigid at all

There is some translucense to it in the wings and fins, but it looks more opaque in normal light.

I had a repro from Barbarossa Customs, and it was very bendable, FYI

I've got a feeling that it is one of his.

Why isn't there a law that states custom pieces must be marked as such?

Most of the Horde Trooper staffs I've seen look like this.

You can see that the plastic is kind of a slightly translucent red/dark red color. I say "most" because I haven't studied the figure enough to know if they're ALL a little bit translucent, or just some of them.

Here are some steps I'd recommend:

    1. Check for what obviously should be there: country of origin stamp (Malaysia, for ones sold in the US), and part number. Look at other examples on eBay to see proper placement of these identifiers. If these identifiers are not there, then odds are it is a custom.

    2. Feel the item for what I call the rough edge spots. These are the mold injection gateways where plastic was injected into the mold during mass production. An authentic piece usually has these gateway spots - the Trooper weapon has two, I think, one toward the bottom and another on the upper half. These rough spots are where the plastic is pinched off after being removed from the mold. If your staff weapon is smooth all around, odds are it is a custom.

    3. The remaining steps have already been discussed - color and texture/elasticity of the plastic. I have to say, mine is not very elastic, although I don't feel much like testing its elasticity.
I'm losing my edge, but I was there. LCD Soundsystem

Sadly it passes most tests. The only thing it doesn't pass is the color test, but that is the first red flag that made me question everything.

COO and Part numbers are there.

    Sprue marks are there.

Whoever made this did their homework, and was doing so to deceive.

I wouldn't write it off as fake, yet. We've discovered a lot of variants at the .Org. A slightly off-colored Horde Trooper staff may be one of them. If I were you, I would inspect it against numerous other samples bearing the same COO before making a final judgment.

That's a difficult proposition to such a pricy accessory.

Well you could study different images and compare colors.

These were only produced in Malaysia and Spain, the Spanish versions are even marked Malaysia on the front and back armor and only marked Spain on the back of the figure. The weapons produced in Malaysia are brighter red and more translucent than the Spanish version, which is what I believe you have. It's hard to be sure without having it in hand but the color looks spot on for the Spanish version.

Interesting development. I was only familiar with the Malaysian version, and the staff WAS marked Malaysia.

Do you have any side by side comparisons?

Also, where is the Spain marking? On the internal red oart that holds the arms on?

I don't have a side by side, but you can see from these images that the Malaysia staff is a bit brighter and more translucent than the Spanish version. And note the comparison between the red of the figure versus the Spanish staff, they are much closer in color than the Malaysia version. And if I'm not mistaken, both weapons are stamped "MALAYSIA", but the color and plastic used are different.
