    I lost a friend...

Yesterday afternoon my family and had to put down our 12 year old lab. Kenzie was a good dog and very gentle. It was hard on all of us, but I know she was hurting and I did the right thing for her.

That must have been hard. Sorry for your loss. At least she is no longer suffering.

Thank you. It was hard for my whole family, we all cried. In the end Kenzie just closed her eyes and went to sleep.

    Sorry for your loss.

What really matters is, it seems like you and your family filled her life with love and companionship and made her 12 years the best they could be.

Thank you. She really was a sweet dog. She would always bring me her ball when I was feeling down.

Losing an animal is brutal, particularly one that has been apart of the family for 12 years. Im really sorry for your loss.

    Sorry for your loss.

Rest well, Kenzie. May all the frisbees fly to you as you run around the great dog park in the sky!

Oh man.. I'm so sorry. Barely holding back tears now. Went through the same thing in December and still not really okay.

Really sorry to hear that, man. That's always devastating. My cat which I raised from birth passed away suddenly at age 19 two years ago and I'm still not really over it. I still have her as my cover photos on Facebook, can't bring myself to change them. She's the background on my phone, too; I need to see her every day, even now.

Good luck with the healing process. May many more pets bless your lives in the future. It's never quite the same, but life does indeed go on. Somehow.

My sympathies. I feel your pain man. We put down our Husky (Conan) a few years ago. I still miss the wily rascal.

    How's he taking it?

When our cat died, our dog went into the closet and cried himself to sleep.

They're very intuitive, more than many people give them credit for. They know when something's wrong. Poor little guys.

I'm not sure it's hit him yet. Although he was not sleeping with me and my wife until last night. I think he knew she was going and was staying with her. I got him a new toy today to help cheer us up.

I am so very sorry for your loss.

Many years ago, when I was in the Air Force, I had an Irish setter puppy named Amber. About a month after I got her, she began having convulsions that were diagnosed as distemper. I tried everything I could, scrubbing and disinfecting every inch of my small apartment with scalding hot water. But the convulsions kept coming quicker. As a search-and-rescue medic and a lifelong dog lover, it was heartbreaking to see Amber dying and there being nothing I could to do prevent it.

After a month I had to put her down. I'm a tough guy, but putting Amber down was the most difficult thing I'd ever done. Afterwards I wept like a baby.

It is one of the great inequities of life that our beloved animal family members do not live as long as we do. As an aside, three months later I got a new Irish setter and she lived to the ripe old age of thirteen.

Desmond Morris, the brilliant zoologist and educator who wrote The Human Zoo, wrote a book called Dogwatching in which he does for dogs what he did for people in The Human Zoo -- a wonderful, comprehensive and often surprisingly compassionate analysis of this extraordinary species that so long ago made a pact with humans: "Feed me, house me, take care of me and love me and I will guard and protect you and your family and I will love you in return all the days of my life." I highly recommend the book for anyone who loves dogs.

In the forward to Dogwatching, Desmond Morris says -- and I paraphrase -- "Dogs are loyal, heroic, selfless and courageous. They love unconditionally and ask only for love in return. They do things on a daily basis that if humans did them they would name streets and schools after them."

    I wholehearted agree with him.

Again, so very sorry for your loss.

Very sorry about this. My feline buddy is 18 years old and is nearing his end. His back hips are giving out and itís tough to see. Itís hard finding that lineÖis he suffering and Iím ignoring it because I donít want to face the gravity of his condition?

Always sad when you have to put down a beloved family pet. But at least she had a good and fulfilling life, and she returned the happiness to you.

Sending hugs and warm fuzzies. I've been there more than enough times. The love and memories will always exist.
