    Blackstar: 40th Anniversary

Sunday, September 12th will mark 40 years since Blackstar first debuted on CBS. I know it's early, but I wanted to be the one to make the announcement.

Makes me sad. I have been wanting to draw the Trobbits as individual pieces, but keep putting it off. Even with forty years, this poor show gets no love.

It gets plenty of love from me. I was a fan from Day One.

It definitely was overshadowed by He-Man, but I did like Blackstar quite a bit.

Blackstar was somethign that I loved a lot more in concept than I did execution. Loved the hero design, the sword, the dragon mount... Always wanted the toys of them.

Overlord and the actual show were... not great. A lot like Silverhawks in that fashions. Thundercats too actually... Love the concepts, but hard to get through now.

I don't think I watched it a lot when it was originally on, but I remember watching some of the episodes on the BCI DVD set and getting a little sleepy due to there being a decent amount of dead space in episodes where there was no talking, but just music. It didn't seem as action packed as He-Man. I enjoyed the toys more which came out after the show was already off the air to try to capitalize off of MOTU's success. I had Tongo, White Knight, and the dragon Warlock as a kid. I liked the demon figurine that came with Tongo a lot. Tongo's head broke off fairly early and wouldn't go back on, so I played with him like a headless horseman type character. I got John Blackstar and Overlord figures MOC around the time of the DVD releases.

Graphically I liked it even more than the MotUs.
I would have loved to have seen it revived in the late 1980s, when Filmation had reached a much higher level of graphics and animation.

I'm enjoying all the comments. True, the show hasn't weathered the decades very well, but there's enough potential for a serious reboot.

I know I had the Blackstar figure and maybe 1 or 2 of the villains when I was a kid. I know mine were the later figures with the spark gimmick.

Like I said, the toy line bears very little resemblance to the cartoon.

I would be writing more stories if there were a larger fandom into that sort of thing.

To think, without it, we probably wouldn’t have the MOTU Filmation series. Blackstar walked so He-Man and the Masters of the Universe could run. I’ll have to check this series out sometime since all the episodes are available on YouTube.

I am sure Blackstar is one of the many reasons MoTU got to be a thing.

In some ways, for the Filmation studios, it was probably a sort of a trial run for MOTU - a lot of the same actors and animators worked on it. I'm not sure when it came out that they knew they would get the MOTU license but some of the concepts are the same.

The earliest MOTU figures were manufactured in 1981, but none hit store shelves until 1982, right? Is there an official street date?

Blackstar was produced and aired as an independent concept. Mattel didn't approach Filmation until later.

Yes, 1982 was when MOTU hit shelves. I'm not sure of the official street date.

I remember watching it as a kid. Saw the entire show, albeit 1 season, last year. I really enjoyed it. Classic Filmation.
