This sounds pretty cool. I'll be buying these. I wish they get the rights to some of the other MOTU-like lines from the 80's like the Remco stuff.

I've always wondered how much He-Man and Blackstar storyboard artist Michael Swanigan had to do with the sprinkling of human ethnic variation in the cartoon series. Having someone around with a different perspective provides different outcomes.

I never heard of "Sun Man" until recently. Seems a very US specific issue. However, I appreciate Mattel introducing authentic characters into the line rather than bending existing ones like they did with King Grayskull.

Oh wait, Anti-Eternia He-Man looks pretty black to me too...

There were very many Head variants for Sun-Man. I think that is why I don't really like the Origins versions we have seen so far. They are so plain and devoid of detail, they almost seem to be an animated style. Hopefully as with He-Man there will eventually be a release with a more detailed serious looking head. They could choose from many of these. All of these pictures are from https://onlinetoyshow.com/

I mostly prefer the Arnold and Willis heads as they seem to have the most depth and seriousness. All of the heads are interesting and I prefer them all to the Origins versions.

The Flat top and Willis heads are smaller and look proportionally the best to me.

The Origins head has incredibly soft features. He looks like a child.

Wasn't the original Sun-Man modeled after her son?

Pay him the likeness rights and lets get it done. What an amazing Sun-Man figure visage he would make. What a story. ( I am assuming this is him from the video)

Sun Man wasn't a bootleg line. It was a line made to be compatible with MOTU. In the 80s, many companies released figures in this scale to be played with MOTU. Remco was one of those companies.

Interesting… I had no idea there was a J-hook head. It slightly reminds me a bit of 80s Mike Tyson although the hair on the sides would need to be faded out more. That being said it is my least favorite head of the series. I also think that the flattop head would be even cooler if he had a mustache going on ala 80/90s Booker T.

The Arnold and/or Willis heads are the Sun Man I know so I’m glad that’s what we’re getting

Why? What would it hurt to have them in waves? Just don’t buy the figures you don’t want?

I mean, I see both sides of it. It's not an "official" MOTU character, ergo it shouldn't take a spot away from a "real" character they could make instead, one which now might not be made at all, hypothetically. That does make sense. Everybody is someone's favorite character; if Origins ended before we got, like, I don't know, Rio Blast or Modulok, but we got Sun-Man and Friends instead during the line's run, that'd be a bit irritating, sure.

At the same time, though, as a kid who turned up his nose at all the MOTU knock-off and bootleg lines, and then came to think they were all really neat as an adult, I'd honestly buy the hell out of Warlord or Galaxy Warriors or whatever other characters in Origins if Mattel decided to go that route. Seeing all of the "Inspired By MOTU" lines incorporated "officially" into MOTU would be pretty neat, in its own way, and might even generate some more interest.

Happy to see Sun Man being brought back into play, and added to the MOTU brand. I had the toys as a kid, and would frequently mix them with my He-Man figures and those 80s Remco figures (Warlord, Hercules, etc).

I am all for bringing those 'bootleg' characters into MOTU, as long as they are not changed too much from their original intent. I do want pighead, and as many other characters they can possibly bring in. There was also a line of dolls planned lead by Butterfly Woman. This was to be the POP equivalent for young Black girls. I think a few were made actually! Would love to see those too, with extra rooted hair heads.

I thought all those knockoff lines were really lame when I was a kid. As an adult however, I think they're pretty neat and wouldn't mind seeing them get pulled into MOTU officially, but I doubt it'll happen. Mattel was only interested in the Sun-Man line to diversify the very white MOTU character roster. Those other lines don't really offer that.

This is true. I personally feel like "Because Race" should never be the one and only reason to do anything, even if intentions are noble, but that's as deep as I feel comfortable going with it.

I do agree that based on that rationale, seeing those other brands brought in would be unlikely.

Selfishly, though, if it were being done for "Here's Something That'd Just Be Cool To Do, Period" reasons and not just checklist reasons, and they WERE inclined to bring those other lines in? Oh, man, I'd love it... so long as it meant we ALSO got those characters and not "we got those characters INSTEAD of This or That MOTU character". I wouldn't like it if Extendar lost his spot in the line to like Baltard or whoever. Y'know what I mean?

I used to see a bunch of those knock-offs/bootlegs as a kid and never cared about "fake" He-Man toys. NOW I look at 'em and realize I could've had twice as many action figures having grand adventures in my living room... more allies for He-Man... more underlings for Skeletor... more characters who could be shaped by my own imagination rather than what the comics and cartoons told me these characters were like...

Instead I was hung up on "boring" character designs and the lack of a spring-loaded waist, and thinking more about that nonsense rather than "Hey... these would go great with my He-Man guys!", which one would think would be more important to a 5-year old. I'd love to have some Warlord and Galaxy Warriors figures now, if only I had the money for 'em. What a stupid little kid I was, sometimes.

Even stranger was that I had a few of the knock-off wrestling figures that Sungold and Madison made back in the day, and I loved them more than the "real" wrestling figures LJN made because the knock-offs had articulation and were "just like my He-Man guys". Stranger still, I never actually mixed those figures in with my He-Man guys because even though they looked similar they were from different lines, and I guess I couldn't yet figure out why He-Man would hang out with pro wrestlers.

8-year old me was a lot sharper than 5-year old me. I think even 7-year old me would groan at some of these boneheaded decisions.

As someone that didn't own a Sun man as a child ( but vey much wishes i had) but *did* own a number of Remco World of the Warlord figures i'd love to see them incorporated into the Origins line as well. However i'd be just as happy to see them released as separate exclusives so they don't take away a "release spot" from an original MOTU character that has yet to be made. As long as we get the character i don't care how.

    Something to chew on.....

I loved MOTU as a child. I went to MOTU live shows , had non action figure product , etc. . I was happy with the MOTU line i had as a child.

I'd have been even happier with Sun Man to go along with Remcos Hercules and Warlord.

If Mattel thinks that a more visually diverse roster of characters would benefit the He-Man line , mythos and the company financially... the Sun Man action figure line is the right one to purchase and include in MOTU if they aren't going to make new characters.

Beyond the African American Sun Man there is a Native American , "Latino" , East Asian , potentially Asian (what many call "middle eastern") and a blonde haired "white" character as well.

Talk about a line tailor made for broader appeal .....

Pretty much agree here. I'd love the idea of some of these "Bonus Characters" from other lines being put out Origins-style and so long as they were easy to get I wouldn't pick nits about how they managed it. Even if it was a "sub-line" with a different title from "Masters of the Universe". How about, I'unno, "Champions of the Galaxy" or "Warriors of the Cosmos" or something in that vein, to keep the whole "It's the same as MOTU, but not literally the same as MOTU" spirit of the original toys themselves, in a kind of tongue-in-cheek way that remains apt for what the product represents? You could even stick one'a those "For play with Masters of the Universe figures!" stamps on the front of the packaging without any danger of lawsuits, this time, since Mattel themselves would be the ones making them!

I mean seriously, if they created such a "sub line" or "sister line" or whatever and released four figures per wave, they could cover most or all of Sun-Man/Rulers of the Sun, Warlord, and Galaxy Warriors in just a few waves as those lines weren't incredibly large. I mean it's niche stuff, but hey, why not? They're already doing this one. Go for broke! "Masters of the WWE Universe" is ending, but it proved there was a demand for a second line in this style and scale even if it wasn't strictly MOTU.

C'mon, Mattel! Just give us a "Warriors of the Galaxy" line or whatever you wanna call it, and give us ALL this stuff! Don't just stop at Sun-Man, that's just plain teasing.

Undoubtedly. I just wish the conversation was a little deeper than JUST that, is all. And I'd like it if they didn't stop at this one "knock-off" line and instead made it part of a larger push to bring all of this stuff "in-house" once and for all. I mean that'd be just plain historic, poetic... and probably another type of "-ic" if there's another apt one I just can't think of at the moment.

I'm tellin' ya, man. "Warriors of the Cosmos" (or whatever) as a sister line to Origins. License to print money. I bet they could even just go ahead and do the Galaxy Warriors characters and not even consult with or pay anybody over it, because I somehow doubt that if anyone from flippin' Sungold is even still alive that they actually care much about preserving rights to any of that stuff anymore.

As much as I'd love Warlord characters in the Origins style, that is impossible now due to McFarlane Toys having the DC license. So unless DC/WB decides to license just Warlord to Mattel (which I can't see happening tbh, since Warlord stuff was in Convergence, which I can't see McFarlane not doing figures from at some point), it will never happen.

As glad as I am that Mattel lost the DC license (McFarlane's doing so much better imo), it's a pity we won't get Origins compatible DC stuff.

I don't have any interest in this character, I mean he looks cool enough but I'd rather have more MOTU characters. I think they should have done 2-packs - one Sun-Man and one MOTU repaint to test the waters.
MOTU Origins Wishlist: Oo-Larr, Karg, Lady Slither, Fang-Or, Goat-Man, Movie He-Man & Skeletor, Hawke, Slamurai, Shadow Weaver, Lodar, Snake Face, Geldor, Lord Gr'Asp, Strobo

I don't hate that idea but it would have to include a mini comic explaining the connection between the two characters and maybe an explanation of the real world history of the "new guy". Also we'd be looking at Mattel having to put a figure we want in these sets, and my experience with Hasbro doing that has shown that does not always work.

I think this socal media campaign and just putting the figures out there is the best way to go.

Has anyone else had Mattel Creations select next day shipping for you? Because I selected standard shipping, but once I paid, it said they're charging for next day.

    What should I do?

This did not happen to me. I would try to contact them. Sun Man isn't supposed to ship until January, so you may be able to get it changed.

Can’t believe I’m the first to make the “Mattel Creations” sucks post! Yay me?

Mattel Creation minions email me at 10:34 am CDT that Sun Man and friends are going to be on sale. When? I don’t know.

I get to read the email at approx. 1:00 pm.

Everything listed in the email is sold out.

Again, thanks for nothing, Mattel Creations. I meant to unsubscribe after being cheated out of Masterverse Scareglow in the summer (yes, -cheated-).

Nothing made by Mattel Creations or for Power Con are relevant anyway. They are simply too rare to be considered part of any line. They are more prototype or proof-of-concept pieces. Oddities. Deliberately shorted-ran money grabbers.

    Mattel should be ashamed.

"I wanted 'em, but I didn't get 'em, so nevermind, they suck anyways."

Y'know what that reminds me of?

"What a fool I am," said the fox. "Here I am, wearing myself out for a bunch of sour grapes that are not worth gaping for."

And off he walked, very, very scornfully.
