The show was not created to sell toys. It was made at the behest of NBCUniversal, not Mattel.

And I don't think a couple crappy dolls that Mattle arbitrarily farted out and then them not bothering with anymore merch was ever going to be a successful line. I grantee that if they got some Figma's made they would sell, because the shows fanbase would be the kind who would eat that kind of stuff up.
The fact that Mattel didn't bother with much toys should tell you what they think of the show.

It tells you that NBCUniversal was not that interested in selling toys, since they were the ones who produced the show.

Well, it's going to be a good while before we hear anything concrete, months at the minimum, more likely years. I still think Amazon wants some sort of pulp action show since Netflix has shown itself to have success with a few of those, and Warner meanwhile is working on a Flash Gordon reboot while Legendary and George Clooney are making a Buck Rogers reboot with the hopes of launching a franchise. She-Ra lends itself perfectly to that.

As long as it's not this or just an SPOP redux, we're fine -

I've skimmed the comments in this thread and this is kinda my thoughts on this.

IF this actually survives and makes it to completion, I'll judge the finish released project.

Until then, the best I can muster is hoping it survives development and the resulting product is something good.

Anybody else wishing that they would make one that is actually cheesy and hokey, more in the style of the old Hercules and Xena shows? Okay. Just me I guess.

I actually wouldn't mind something that was just nice and happy camp, compared to trying so hard to look slick. Thinking of the new Mortal Kombat movie versus the 1990s one here.

Initial thought is no, I don't want cheesy and hokey. It's a fine line to straddle to make camp good... check out the reactions to the recent Malignant movie.

That said, you bring up examples of "good" camp in the forms of Xena and the 90s Mortal Kombat (even the newer/recent one is a good example to me). So yeah, if they go this route with similar results as these examples, I would be okay with that.

I'd still rather have a straight forward version with some added situational humor... like the Netflix SPOP or CG MOTU... or the MCU.

I bought the Witcher up for a reason. Itís the right amount of serious/camp that it feels like a latter day version of Hercules and Xena. Thatís what I think they should aim for.

All of those are cheesy and hokey. There's nothing wrong with that either in some cases.

Since this the rights are owned by Universal it will likely take a lot of influence from the Filmation series which they also own the rights to. It will likely go in the opposite direction from the Witcher and be a more colorful and kid friendly version of "Xena."

Madam Raz and other side characters in the Wispering woods will probably end up looking like scenes from the Maleficent movie. I bet takes a lot of influence from Maleficent which was a huge blockbuster movie that made $760 million dollars and basically kickstarted the whole lets make cartoons into live action trend. This is Universal's way of getting in on that Disney action without getting sued from copyright infringement.

Should be LOTR light/a lil Xena ish.

Emphasis on story, action, and beautiful visuals. And don't reinvent the story... it's pretty spectacular as is! Show a new audience the original She-ra!!!

Well obviously the look would be updated (although Xena was famous for having a lot of scenery porn. Thanks New Zealand) and so would the effects, but at one point, Xena (and to a lesser extent Hercules) was the most popular show on the planet, surpassing Baywatch at the time. She Ra getting half that audience would be a massive success.

Itís also why I want to see hot women in outfights sword fighting. No Cats Catra, a human woman with a cat themed cape like the 80s would work perfectly.

    Spoken so fluently.

Xena was brilliant. Thank god your views aren't fact or are reflective of the majority.

Xena was never the most popular show on the planet. It is hard to even find information about this show. Looks like Xena only had a 5.9 Nielsen rating at it's highest and then trended down from there to a 3.3 rating. Xena mostly just rode on the coat-tails of Star-Trek which had a 6.9 rating in the mid to late 1990s.

I am with you on this. Xena was trash. It was the only show I ever "hate-watched" because the only thing on in it's time slot. It was either that go read a book and study for school.

Hate watching a show is never a good idea in my opinion, all you end up doing is make the infamous "don't like, don't watch" argument valid.

If this show ever comes to fruition, expect A LOT of changes. You won't see She-Ra flying around on Swift Wind- they won't have the budget for that.

Actually you are incorrect, Xena was the number one show and beat Baywatch, Star Trek and Hercules The Legendary Journeys in ratings. It was aired in over 100 countries and still is being aired even though it ended in 2001. There are still fan conventions to this day and there is even talks about a reboot/revival.

(This is from Wikipedia) The series soared past its predecessor in ratings and in popularity. In its second season it became the top-rated syndicated drama series on American television. For all six years, Xena remained in the top five!

In 1996 to 1997 Xena had ratings of 7.8 million viewers.

Xenas costume was donated to the Smithsonian by Lucy Lawless herself.

    Xena won many Emmy awards.

Xena also had it's own Universal Studios Theme Park attraction, never ending merchandise from action figures, dolls, replica weapons, clothing, mugs and anything you could think of.

So if the live action She-Ra was anything like Xena that would be great and I would definitely be happy with that, I think that's a great choice.

Source please: looking back at Wikipedia

Footnote #70 points back to a site called Whoosh. A totally believable and credible website.

But even if you take them at their word. The key phrase that you are missing is this part here "top-rated syndicated drama series" which does not include all shows on Television. Rated against all shows on Television Xena did quite poorly. Lets get our facts straight.

According to IMDB Xena didn't even crack the top 30 in 1995.

    nor 1996

    nor 1997

    nor 1998

    nor 1999

Sorry I don't see any Xena here.

I think youíre focusing solely on US ratings, while failing to account for international markets. Itís why the top rated show before that was Baywatch, the sheer amount of international distribution that these shows possessed.

This just a guess but I doubt that He-Man will be in the 1st season, there is the movie that might come out but other than that I don't see any other way to do it at the moment.
