Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023)

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Next Chapter”

To make it new while not jettisoning what made “Ninja Turtles” so beloved, Yashar Kassai says, “you anchor yourself enough in the familiar elements ofit so that it is easily recognizable but then you either add or enhance some of the existing charm of the franchise.”

With modern animation tools and 3D, he feels a responsibility to make something cool for the new movie similar to “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and “The Mitchells vs. the Machines.”

“The franchise deserves that, I think.” — Shalini Dore

So is this a new show or toyline? Both?

I know Varner sculpted the original series.

This is the title of a new TMNT movie coming out in 2023.

The title, "The Next Chapter" has been speculated for months now because of all the little leaks that have made it out to the public.

Yashar Kassai is a 3D animator, so I'll be interested with the direction this movie takes.

My question is whether or not this is the same reboot movie that Seth Rogan is involved with...?

This one has been rumored for quite some time now...

Judging from the logo, it's possible it's a direct follow up to the 80s cartoon.

Ah yeah, forgot that was coming. So what were the leaks for this or where can I find them?

    Teaser trailer:

    Looks very Into the Spider-verse-ish...

I think it looks great though. Very excited for this one... a more comical take on a younger version of the brothers.

Looks fantastic. I think this is the most excited I've been about TMNT since the NECA Mirage figures.

I wish that Neca or even Super 7 were making the movie figures instead of Playmates... ugh. Their toys lately are like direct-to-Big Lots quality.

I would love to see a TMNT movie with The Rat King as the villain one day.

The altogether best thing for my sanity is to pretend that Peter Laird quietly folded the brand in 2009. The Nick sale never happened, and neither did anything that came after.

If all goes as planned and I end up with the Multiverse-punching power of Superboy Prime, I plan to create a "perfect world" where all that exists of TMNT is the Mirage and Archie comics, the 1990 movie, the video games, the first two or three Seasons of the FW cartoon, the first three Seasons of 4Kids, and the various toy lines. I *might* let Turtles Forever slip in, since it takes such clear and visceral joy in pummeling the 1980s cartoon, and good GOD do I (mostly) hate that cartoon. But as a movie it's rather forgettable, so I may not bother with keeping it. Depends on my mood, that eventual day when I disassemble-then-recreate the Universe.

As far as anything Nick-branded TMNT goes, the absolute nicest thing I can possibly say is, "I have nothing at all nice to say." And I say that through cracked and gritted teeth.

So yeah, wait, there's a TMNT movie? Impossible. TMNT ended in 2009 and is retired with grace and dignity, as it should be. Clearly, your intel is wrong.

I've loved all the Ninja Turtles versions, the 80's-90's classic version, the 2003-2009 series, Next Mutation, the Nickelodeon series and Rise Of..., Turtles Forever, the 2007 CGI movie, all five live action movies, and the Batman/TMNT crossover movie.

And this is where we differ.

Even as a kid, I never felt that liking A Thing meant subsequently liking ALL of The Things relating to That Thing. That seemed highly illogical.

Take Superman, for instance. I always liked Superman. But as a kid, I'd only seen some things, like the contemporary comics, the first two movies, and the cartoons which by then were re-branded as Super Powers: Galactic Guardians. And those things were fine. But then I'd see, like, the original 1970s Super-Friends cartoons, and even as a young child I was like, "Well, this is clearly garbage that would insult the intelligence of a damp washcloth, I'm not watching this nonsense just because Superman is in it, that would be needless self-torture." Reading pretty much any Superman comic prior to 1980 elicited a similar response. I love the character more than almost anything, but it took almost 5 decades for anyone to figure out how to write him properly, and when people get it wrong they do it VERY wrong. So while the very best Superman stuff is some of my all-time favorite fiction... there is a veritable ocean of crap that I am never, ever going to subject myself to again.

As far as Ninja Turtles... I'll be honest, the first time I was made aware of it, I hated it. At the wise old age of 6 I was like, "This is the dumbest thing I have ever seen in my life, I can't believe idiots think THIS stuff is cooler than He-Man." Then I actually watched a few more episodes and it grew on me, and I admit I was a pretty huge fan for a while. Then the 1990 movie came out, and it "ruined" the franchise for me by being so much better than everything else, especially the cartoon which I was already growing tired of - as I said, I wasn't a huge fan at first sight, anyway, and while I liked the characters and the plots and the action I NEVER liked the humor or the over-reliance on slapstick and puns. It was an unapologetically "dumb" cartoon, and I never had a lot of patience for things like that, I just have to be honest. The movie, though, was much more in line with what I wanted to see. That gave me hope that the brand might be "growing up" with its audience.

Turns out... nah. They immediately pivoted into making the sequels into comedic farces that took everything I hated from the cartoon and amplified it. And everything since then - with the exception of 4Kids, which was ignored for "not being goofy enough" and since been mostly-forgotten - has just been doubling down on everything I've always hated. There will never, ever be another TMNT product in the vein of the 1990 movie, not in style, tone, or anything, and I know that. That's what I want, and Nick refuses to even entertain that notion. So I'm done. I've been done. They'll never get a dime from me again.

The thing is, I feel like the property has themes that can be very powerful, if explored properly. For example: found/adopted family, living as an "outcast" in a world that refuses to accept you, the sins of the "fathers" being put upon the sons, being coerced into fighting a "war" that was never yours, the pointlessness of perpetuating a cycle of violence, and what to do with yourself when either that cycle ends or you decide you just want nothing more to do with it... those are ALL things that the brand can and should be able to explore, and in fact TMNT is better-equipped to do so than a lot of other properties. Those are the things that interest me. Not vapid nonsense like endless goofy mutants or terrible pizza jokes.

Those were the ideas that the brand was in fact created to explore in the first place. Those were the stories that Eastman and Laird wanted to tell with these characters. They simply got fast-talked into a bad deal by a toy company - a deal Laird instantly regretted and has never been shy about saying so out loud - and ever since then, the brand's actual raison d'etre has been cast aside in favor of "COWABUNGA DUUUUUUUDES!!!" And that is inherently tragic, no matter how many people are happy with the vapid swill they've been served. Some people, I'm sure, like the taste of fermented cat urine; that doesn't mean it's good for you, and if you'd choose it over champagne you're kind of not right.

It simply was not created to ONLY be a little kids' property. It became that. But it is not particularly good as that. And knowing, for a fact, that there will NEVER be another time when anyone is allowed to explore the world, characters, and themes in a manner similar to how they were created and intended to be portrayed, and only go further and further in the complete opposite direction... well, I can't care anymore. Seeing so much potential being perpetually wasted because the Powers-That-Be insist that they need to double-and triple-down on "goofy" is more than I can bear.

It's no wonder Laird almost-wishes he never created TMNT at all. Seeing what it's turned into versus what he actually created must be like watching someone bludgeon your baby to death with an oversized cartoon mallet. Which will probably be how the Turtles beat the bad guy in the newest movie, if things stay true to form.

It doesn't help that I used to hang out a lot on the TMNT forum, where the people are collectively, incurably stupid, racist, homophobic, and just all-around lousy, hateful people. Knowing that the most devoted fans of the property were such awful people was the last straw, for me. Any love I ever had for the brand was pretty much dissolved once realization set in that it is most-devotedly beloved by morons.

Like, I disagree with You Guys on a ton of stuff, too. But at least most of you aren't a bunch of Stormfront rejects like Those People are. It's awful. I've "known" some of them for 20 years, I had no idea they were a bunch of bigots until like 5 minutes ago, figuratively. They spend like half their time nitpicking the minutiae of any and all TMNT things, and the rest of the time whining about how there's too many black and gay people in movies and TV shows nowadays. I don't know how they sleep, or when, in between all the caterwauling.

But yeah. I don't like TMNT anymore. For a ton of reasons. Most Recent Reason being, the fanbase is godawful and cannot be redeemed. But also, it's all junk and I don't care for junk.

Thanks for indulging this rant. I've been working a ton of 12 hour days lately and some stuff has been boiling over for a while.

Thankfully I've not had that experience with TMNT fans, I loathe and despise bigotry of all kinds as I am sure you aware and could not tolerate any of that. My experience with TMNT fans has always been positive. I just love the characters and stories and I'm positive I always will. When I love something, that love is forever. I don't give my fandom lightly to anything that isn't special to me.

It would be like loving a favourite musician or band and then finding out they were bigots. That would absolutely kill me.

Actually, I have had that experience with one member of a band called The Continental Drifters where I discovered this particular member (whose name I don't even feel like mentioning) had radically different politics than I had, and he wasn't above pointing that out to me in no uncertain terms. After talking with another member of the band (Peter Holsapple), I was reassured that this other person was an EX-MEMBER and did not share the values and views of the rest of the band which is why I am still a fan of the band. Plus there are two other band members of the band I am extremely fond of, and they definitely share my views and values, one of whom is also a member of The Bangles - Vicki Peterson and the other is her sister-in-law Susan Cowsill.

It's something I wrestle with a lot as a fan of music. Two genres I love are punk and metal, but the fanbases of either genre are very outspokenly racist and bigoted. Thus, I try my best to simply enjoy the music and never, ever engage with the fans.

I'm at that point with most things in my life. It's just safer.
People: "Hey, nice shirt! We both like the same thing! Wanna talk about it and get to know each other better?"
Me: "Absolutely not, that sounds dreadful."

Otherwise, you let your guard down, start to trust someone because you have things in common, and then come to find out they're a Hitler fanatic or they like black licorice, or something else completely unacceptable. It never gets any easier and by this point I figure I have enough "friends".

I actually love getting to know other fans and making new friends. I've made several friends among past MasterChef contestants even and I am eagerly awaiting the new season and hopefully making more friends, the show isn't just about the food or the competition for me.

I was speaking about Amy Grant to someone the other say, and while they said that they liked her music, they couldn't bring themselves to know too much about Amy in case her views and values did not reflect upon them in a positive light. I happily told them that Amy is indeed open-minded and open-hearted and they didn't need to worry. I like chatting with the fans, but I enjoy my interactions with just the musicians even more. I have an especially great relationship with Jane Wiedlin and Gina Schock from The Go-Go's and the other day Matraca Berg and I were ganged up on by a bunch of bigots but we held our own and had each other's backs.

I mean, there's people at work I can have those conversations with. A very small number of "real life friends" as well, I guess. But it's just SO much different doing it in Real Life. Online, I gotta be honest, I really do not like it. People speak with such declarative authority on topics which, when pressed, you discover they often don't even know all that much about. And they fall into the trap of letting other peoples' opinions become Theirs, simply parroting what they've heard others say rather than forming their own opinions. And since by design the entire thing is less "conversing" than "exchanging walls of text", it's just not as much fun as in real life.

I'd sincerely rather be with five friends who I agree with on almost nothing, sharing a lively exchange of ideas over coffee at Denny's, than with ten people on a message board who I may agree with on some things but express themselves in awful fashion. It's just such a different experience.

Take you and I, for instance. We've had words, mostly because your online "persona", as in the way you present yourself, grates on my nerves sometimes. But you're probably a nice guy and in real life I do have a feeling I'd find you a lot less annoying. Conversely, I come off very stern and self-serious online, and I am aware of that, it's just how I express, but I know I'm not everyone's cup of tea either thanks to my "typing tone". If someone watches me on YouTube, though, they would get a much better idea of my real personality. I'm actually quite charming.

So if you and I met offline, we might have fun. For starters, I could finally live out my long-wished for drinking game where everyone takes a shot every time you say "absolutely"! We'd all be dead in ten minutes from liver failure, but it'd still be fun! And in person, you physically could not spray emojis everywhere like glitter, which would also make me much more relaxed in your presence. These are playful jabs, but I'm serious; online, you make me sigh sometimes, but I'm pretty sure it'd be entirely different in real life, because I find it to be that way incredibly often, with people.

Moral of the Story: I can still be coerced into Nerd Conversations, but I much prefer it to be offline. Everyone is just plain nicer, you can hear and feel the laughter, and most important, you can shoulder-punch the One Guy who has to be a toolbox and insist that Flash Gordon wasn't epic. There's always One.

Rikki did you check IDW comics? I think they would be more to your liking.

It's weird because I both like and at the same time dislike that style of animation for the new movie, I could watch a ten minute short done like that but not a full movie.
