Mattel had had limited success with licensed properties like Flash Gordon and Clash of the Titans in the past. Masters of the Universe was enormously popular from the beginning, and Mattel had a tough time keeping up with demand. With the introduction of the Filmation He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series, the brand’s popularity continued to grow until it suddenly suddenly ended in the US in 1987.
